From the official timekeepers of the Olympic Games. Presenting the Omega Tokyo 2020 Olympics special edition Seamasters As official timekeepers of the Olympic Games for the 29th time, Omega unveiled a limited edition Planet Ocean and a Diver 300M for the Toyo 2020 Summer Olympics The summer of 2020 was supposed to mark Omegaâs 29th turn as the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games. Unfortunately, the global COVID-19 pandemic delayed the event with uncertainty, and the games could only begin this year. While the stadiums in Tokyo, Japan, were without an audience, the games continued, as the world watched. Swiss watchmakers Omega have recorded every second of the games, including the new sports, such as karate, sport climbing, surfing, skateboarding, and baseballâmaking the number of competitions timed by Omega higher than ever before. With every edition of the Olympic Games, Omega unveil special editions of their signature watches, themed around the event, with elements that draw inspiration from the sports, the Olympic symbols, the host nations and cities, the venues, and so on. Probably the most popular collection of Omegaâs in their Olympics repertoire of special editions, the Seamaster was chosen for the Tokyo 2020 games as well. Among the Tokyo 2020 Seamasters, the Planet Ocean and the Diver 300M stand out as the professional-grade diverâs watches. While the Planet Ocean is a limited edition with subtle but definite elements of the Tokyo 2020 games, the non-limited Diver 300M is more representative of the bestselling series that it is a part of. As Tokyo 2020 draws to a close this week, letâs take a closer look at Omegaâs association with the Olympics, and at these special editionsânow available in India. MRP: Starts at â¹4,68,000

Over the years, theyâve evolved and theyâve developed the most effective technologies in sport timekeeping. Theyâve come a long way since Los Angeles 1932, where they sent just one watchmaker with 30 accurate stopwatches to time the games. Since then, theyâve developed photo-finish cameras and photocell technology to capture composite images of athletes reaching the finish line, as well as to send out light beams instead of finishing tapes that can send relevant information on the results. There are sensitive touchpads immersed in pools that swimmers touch at the end of a lap or the race, recording their timing. There are athletic starting blocks to catch any false start by an athlete. There are electronic starting pistols to record starting time, and trigger speakers behind every racer to have them hear the start sound simultaneously. And thereâs so much more. There are trackers and cameras and all sorts of equipment that send crucial data and videos and whatnot, which are not only essential to determine results, but also help athletes and coaches to analyse performance, and enhance the viewersâ experience as they get real-time results and supplementary information. This year alone, Omega have timed 339 events, across 33 sports, with their most advanced timekeeping yet. Theyâve had 400 tonnes of equipment, including scoreboards, cables and optical fibre, as well as 530 on-site timekeeping professionals and 900 trained volunteers. The emblem in blue and the rings in their five colours are transferred onto the sapphire crystal of the casebacks. Itâs commonly known that the five interlocking rings of the Olympics logo that has been used for over a century are meant to represent the five major continentsâthe Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia with Oceania. As for the Tokyo 2020 emblem, itâs an adaptation of a chequered pattern, in a circle. Chequered patterns have been popular in countries around the world throughout history. In Japan, the chequered pattern was known as ichimatsu moyo in the Edo period (1603â1867), and this chequered design in the traditional Japanese colour of indigo blue expresses a refined elegance and sophistication that exemplifies Japan. Composed of three varieties of rectangles, the design represents different countries, cultures and ways of thinking. It incorporates the message of âUnity in diversityâ, while expressing the fact that the Olympic and Paralympic Games seek to promote diversity as a platform to connect the world. The Seamaster Planet Ocean Tokyo 2020 Limited Edition: with Japan on the dial Every host country of the Olympic Games brings a unique flair and culture to the event. Japan is no exception. And this Omega Seamaster has been crafted with just the right Japanese touch. In addition to the emblems on the caseback, the Planet Ocean Tokyo 2020 Limited Edition has a presence of the games on the face of the watch as well. The all-white look of the timepiece is by design, and not just for the design. The red dot on the lollipop-style central seconds hand against the pristine white dial is meant to emulate the Japanese national flag, which is literally a large red dot on white. A very effective element, it is still extremely subtle. Another nod to the Olympics comes in the form of the 20-minute mark on the bezel. The '20' is in liquid ceramic, in the same red as that of the seconds hand, and signifies 2020. This is a part of the 60-minute timer on the unidirectional-rotating diverâs bezel. This scale on the white ceramic bezel insert is actually in Omegaâs proprietary bulk metallic glass called Liquidmetalâmainly comprising zirconium, titanium, copper, nickel and berylliumâwhich can be formed into very thin structures. It also lends the bezel a very smooth appearance with an unmatched sheen. MRP: â¹6,21,000

To aid readability in the dark and underwater, the hands and indices are adequately filled with Super-LumiNova. The case itself is sized at a very agreeable 39.5mm. It is water-resistant to 600m or 2,000ft, making it a very robust diverâs watch that would definitely be suitable for swimming and any other water sport event at the Olympics. This watch comes fitted with a white leather strap, in keeping with the all-white look. However, it also comes with two extra straps in the presentation box. One is a pale grey NATO strap, and the other, a stainless steel bracelet.

The element on the face of the watch that reflects this summer edition of the Olympics is so subtle that this could very well be any of the other versions of the Diver 300M. The white dial, surrounded by a blue bezel is intended to reflect the Tokyo 2020 emblem with its blue ring, which you see on the caseback. The blue ring of the unidirectional-rotating diverâs bezel is in ceramic, with the numerals of the 60-minute timer filled with white enamel. To complement the bezel, there are blue accents on the dialâmainly on the skeletonised hands and the large Super-LumiNova-filled hour markers. With a date window at six oâclock, the dial itself is in white ceramic, which gives it an intensity of colour or the lack thereof, and lending it extra depth are the laser-engraved wavesâa pattern that has become a Diver 300 signature.
