Exemplifying German engineering and design. Seven amazing watches from Nomos, the German watchmaking

Exemplifying German engineering and design. Seven amazing watches from Nomos, the German watchmaking sensation Urbanely clean and understated, Nomos timepieces remain a symbol of the famed Glashütte watch industry in Germany Raising the bar of fine watchmaking ever since Roland Schwertner founded the brand after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Nomos fits perfectly in the time-honoured tradition of Glashütte watchmaking. Its enduring designs present a fresh, modern take, while also being quite accessible. While many may associate Nomos’ designs with the minimal aesthetic of Germany’s venerated Bauhaus school of design, it is, in fact, its predecessor, Deutscher Werkbund that governs the Nomos Glashütte credo. Using a ‘form follows function’ and ‘less is more’ design approach, in tandem with innovative technology, this brand has been honoured with numerous coveted design awards—the Good Design Award, Red Dot Award, iF Design Award, Green Product Award, Goldene Unruh, to name a few. Among their biggest achievements, though, was when they announced complete independence from the Swiss, in 2014, on having introduced their own escapement system, called the Nomos Swing, which is made in-house in Glashütte. As part of this complete independence, and being able to manufacture everything in-house, was their ability to make their own hairsprings—the essential component of a watch for which most of the industry relies on the Swatch Group’s Nivarox as a supplier. The extremely thin, coiled hairspring, which ensures that the balance swings back and forth at a constant frequency, is a component that’s very complex to manufacture. Nivarox have retained their monopoly over this component, as no other supplier has been able to make hairsprings of the same quality and at competitive prices. Hence, a handful of manufacturers, including Nomos, have developed their own. Breaking away from such dependence and monopoly is definitely one of the many feathers in their cap. While all Nomos’ timepieces are assembled in Glashütte, they are designed in Berlin at the in-house studio, Berlinblau. Here are seven of the finest Nomos timepieces with in-house movements that epitomise German watchmaking at its best. Tangente Neomatik 41 Update Midnight Blue With the innovative ‘highlighted’ date display Tangente, with its minimalist and refined design, represents the quintessential design pillars of German watchmakers Nomos Glashütte. At Watches and Wonders 2021, the brand unveiled the Tangente Neomatik with a new dial interpreted in midnight blue. What makes this timepiece one-of-a-kind is its patented date display. Its date ring, at the periphery of the dial, is defined by the analogue display with Arabic numerals and highlighting apertures flanking them. Unlike its predecessors, which relied on the colour red to highlight the date, this new Tangente Neomatik has looped in bright acid green to frame the current date. To ensure legibility in the dark, the green hue is treated with Super-LumiNova—giving the piece a livelier appearance. It is equipped with Nomos’ revolutionary in-house calibre DUW 6101—the first Neomatik calibre with a date mechanism. It offers a power reserve of 42 hours and is packed in a 40.5mm stainless steel case. The watch is presented on a durable black leather strap and is water-resistant to 50m. MRP: ₹3,43,000 For more information, please call our Luxury Watch Helpline on [+91 8725028898](tel:08725028898), [+91 8725028885](tel:08725028885) [Click here to connect with us on WhatsApp]( Club Campus Future Orange, Absolute Gray An all-rounder watch for those who are young at heart One of the most versatile timepieces from the German watchmaker, the Nomos Club is an ideal companion for your wrist. Though this collection is designed to enthral younger horology enthusiasts—new graduates and young working professionals—it can certainly suit anyone who’d like an all-rounder watch that can easily make its way from the playing field to the office. Here, the models featured are: Club Campus Absolute Gray and Future Orange. These timepieces are equipped with the in-house Alpha manual-winding movement. This tiny mechanism is lighter than a feather but high on precision. With a power reserve of 43 hours, in each watch, the movement is housed in a round, stainless steel case, 38mm in diameter, water-resistant to 100m, and is presented on a sophisticated velour leather strap in anthracite. Their dial flaunts a very modern vibe with a mix of Arabic and Roman numerals and indexes, coated with Super-LumiNova. The watches are named Absolute Gray and Future Orange after the colours of the dials, as an extension of the collection’s ‘campus’ theme. Its patented date display—which circumscribes the dial, showing the entire month at a glance—is updated with date markers. Its galvanised, white, silver-plated dial, with minutes indicated instead of hour numerals, comes housed in a 40.5mm stainless steel case. At one glance you will be able to tell the current date framed within the neon orange date markers. Another update is its dark grey textile strap—developed in collaboration with Mark Braun, the Berlin-based carpenter and artist. The Metro is equipped with Nomos’ in-house calibre, the DUW 6101—the first Neomatik (or ‘new automatic’) calibre with a date mechanism—offering a power reserve of 42 hours. MRP: ₹3,75,000 For more information, please call our Luxury Watch Helpline on [+91 8725028898](tel:08725028898), [+91 8725028885](tel:08725028885) [Click here to connect with us on WhatsApp]( Tangente Sport Neomatik 42 Date The most distinctive bracelet strap you can find In 2019, Nomos shifted towards a sportier aesthetic with the introduction of the Tangente Sport Neomatik 42 Date watches. However, at its core, the brand is always guided by its philosophy of crafting minimalistic classical watches suited to a contemporary audience. These exceptionally robust models are powered by the brand’s Neomatik date calibre DUW 6101, which can run for up to 42 hours autonomously. The inner workings of the movement can be viewed through the sapphire crystal caseback. This mechanism is housed in a stainless steel case, equipped with reinforced seals and a sapphire crystal glass. The Tangente Sport is available in two versions—with a white, silver-plated dial and in marine black. The date window sits at three o’clock while the small seconds counter is at six o’clock—contrasted by a red hand for the black dial and a white one for the white version. The rhodium-plated hands, enhanced with Super-LumiNova, along with the luminous hour indices, add character to these solid watches besides offering great legibility underwater. Their unique character is furthered by the brand’s trademark stainless steel bracelet, created by screwing together 145 individual parts, replete with a deployant clasp. The wearer can easily attach the bracelet, or adjust it to suit their wrist, by using a screwdriver to remove additional links. The watch offers water resistance up to 300m—suitable even for water sports. The suave blue hue on the dial, with a semi-circular ring coated with Super-LumiNova, accompanies the hour hand with blue luminescent coating. This element draws from speedometers in cars, which is in keeping with the inspiration of this watch. Named after the German highway system that is devoid of a mandated speed limit, it was designed in collaboration with German designer Werner Aisslinger. The slender red-tipped minute hand and its immersed sub-dial at the six o’clock position, with the red seconds hand, exude a sporty yet sophisticated vibe. While the hour markers follow the Bauhaus typography usually seen in Nomos watches, the small linear indexes, with minute numerals towards the inner edge, make it clearly visible. The extended date window below the seconds sub-dial, displaying the preceding, present and succeeding dates, is also quite legible. The raised sapphire crystal glass with double antireflective coating is a nice feature, while the sapphire crystal caseback of the 41mm steel case offers a partial view of the movement. Water-resistant up to 100m, this watch sports a complementing dark blue NATO strap. This watch boasts the famous Nomos Swing system—their proprietary escapement, developed over seven years, in collaboration with the University of Dresden, for inputs on the mathematical front. Making an escapement—the part of the mechanism that gives a watch its heartbeat—is a big deal in watchmaking. The manual-winding movement runs the slender hour and minute hands in black, as well as the small seconds at the six o’clock position and the date below it. However, the most fascinating part of the display is the power reserve indicator, just off-centre, in red and mint green. One of the most minimalistic power reserve indicators you’ll come across, it is also very aesthetically pleasing—perfectly exemplifying Nomos’ design and watchmaking values. Sized at 37mm, this watch is water-resistant up to 30m, and comes with a sapphire crystal glass and caseback. MRP: ₹2,84,000 For more information, please call our Luxury Watch Helpline on [+91 8725028898](tel:08725028898), [+91 8725028885](tel:08725028885) [Click here to connect with us on WhatsApp]( Ludwig Neomatik 41 Date A neo-classical timepiece that reflects outstanding design For Nomos, it is their ability to combine superior German watchmaking technology with minimalistic design codes that lend their timepieces a distinctive and classical appeal. The Ludwig Neomatik 41 Date is the epitome of elegance, with its round steel case, presented on a black leather strap that, together, hark back to the era of vintage dress watches, while retaining Nomos’ very modern minimalism. The white dial features Roman hour markers, and a date window at three o’clock, with Arabic numerals. There’s also a small seconds sub-dial at six o’clock that balances the delicate symmetry of the timepiece. The tempered blue hands add character to the watch as they stand out against the pristine backdrop. With ‘made in Germany’ emblazoned on the dial as a hallmark of excellence, Nomos take great pride in being an authentic German brand. The watch is equipped with the in-house calibre DUW 6101. It can function smoothly for up to 42 hours when fully wound. Water-resistant to 50m, the Ludwig Neomatik 41 Date is presented on a black leather strap, fitted with a square, winged clasp.
