The high-performance dive watch just got better. Introducing the new Doxa Sub 300 COSCânow in carbon Doxa have released their revolutionary dive watch in the resilient and lightweight carbon, increasing its durability and functional appeal More than 50 years ago, in 1967, Doxa, the Swiss watch manufacturer, introduced a revolutionary diver's watch. One of the ingenious innovations that set it apart from all others was a bright orange dial, which made it more readable in the darkness of depths. Since then, the brand have built their dive watch portfolio with new editions that have been high on functional appeal, while even offering a spectrum of hues other than the original orange. Doxa have, in fact, become synonymous with dive watchesâa genre that has become their forte. The Sub 300, which is their most recognisable watch, has largely been offered in steel so far. This year, the collection has expanded with editions of its iconic Sub 300 in carbon. The signature barrel-shaped silhouette of the brand is seen even in this edition, but in carbon, it offers extra resilience and, with the materialâs lightness, itâs even more functional than the steel editions. Moreover, with a COSC-certified chronometer calibre within, and options in all of Doxaâs trademark colours, this is quite a solid series indeed. Letâs take a closer look. Key highlights of the Doxa Sub 300 Carbon Built from forged carbon, this new edition of the Sub 300 offers all the benefits of this technical and contemporary material, which is particularly well-suited for Doxaâs dive watches. The carbon case retains the titular water resistance of 300m. The dial comes in turquoise, yellow, navy blue, grey, or black, in addition to the same orange as the legendary Doxa Sub 300 Professionalâthe first Sub 300 that came out in 1967. These watches come fitted with rubber straps, either in black to match the carbon of the case, or in the same hue as the dial in each version, except for the black and grey dial versions, which only come with black straps. That makes it a total of 10 variants to choose from. And certified by COSC (Official Swiss Chronometer Control), the chronometer calibre running these watches makes them reliable timekeepers as well. The radical innovations it introduced quickly made it the benchmark for professionals. Rated to 30 ATM, ie water-resistant to a depth of 300m or about 980ft, it was the first to feature a unidirectional-rotating bezel with a dual indication of dive time and depth. Both combined enabled divers to calculate and monitor dive duration to ensure a safe ascent without decompression stops. At the time, the US Navy no-decompression dive table was the most authoritative system, allowing divers to monitor their underwater time as a function of depth to ensure a safe return to the surface. Doxa's engineers took the US Navyâs findings and incorporated two separate scales into the bezel, one orange on the outer âdepthâ ring and the other black on the inner âminutesâ ring. It became a Doxa patent. The Sub 300 also became instantly recognisable for another reason. It was the first diverâs watch ever to sport a bright orange dial, which was a departure from the traditional black or white dials that were the norm in diving watches back then. Vibrant colours that are as functional as they are bold âThe idea of using orange for the dial came from the engineers who were carrying out tests in Lake Neuchâtel in Switzerland,â explains Jan Edöcs, CEO of Doxa. âIt was the colour orange that continued to offer optimal legibility even at 30m, [as compared with more neutral hues]. Also, going with orange was rather daring at the time, because all the other diverâs watch dials were black, silver or white.â Yet, for those who prefer neutral hues, the Doxa Sub 300 was eventually offered with black and silver-hued dials in 2015. More recently, the range was expanded to offer dials in up to six different colours. The original orange is still called Professional. Silver (or grey) and black are known as Searambler and Sharkhunter, respectively. The newer hues are navy, called the Caribbean dial; the yellow is known as Divingstar; and the turquoise is aptly named Aquamarine. The Sub 300 Carbon is available in all these colours as well. Interestingly, orange is retained as the colour for the minute hand and the bezel markings of the black, grey and navy variants. Carbonâthe new armour of the dive watch powerhouse In 2020, Doxa came out with a Sub 300 special Aqua Lung US Divers edition, limited to 300 pieces, and made from carbon. It was extremely successful. So with this new Carbon edition, Doxa are offering the goodness of carbon in all their Sub 300 non-limited watches. Uncannily lightweight compared with steel, forged carbon gives off an urban camouflage vibe that alternates shades of charcoal grey and black, an iridescent effect that fluctuates with the intensity of the light, turning the watch into a more radical, more contemporary statement. The texture, the look and feel of forged carbon are simply one of a kind. The high-tech material is compact and smooth. Practically unique to every piece, the very particular non-homogeneous marblingâachieved with randomly worked fibresâexpresses a subtle balance between being respectful of its heritage, yet provocative in the same way the original Sub 300 was. The result is a touch of edginess that does not in the least betray the legend and instead. Using a high-performance material, at the service of its functionality, projects it into the future. With a diameter of 42.5mm, the SUB 300 Carbon COSC features a pressure-resistant titanium chamber and screw-down crown to afford maximum protection for the movement. The watch is water-resistant to a depth of 300m. Its scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass, with antireflective treatment, has the distinctive dome shape of the curved Plexiglas used for the original series back in the day. All dive-related displays stand out in low-light conditions thanks to the Super-LumiNova in the hands and markers, thus ensuring excellent readability during dives where visibility is reduced. The hour indices are clearly visible, as is the dual indication of dive time in minutes and depth in metres on the bezel. The signature dual-scale bezel to calculate dive time and depth For the dive time scale on the bezel, the inserts are white, punctuated with a dot at 12 oâclock. The inserts of the bezel, graduated in metres for depths, are coloured, with a light dot at 12 hours. With this patented, unidirectional-rotating bezel that allows the wearer to calculate no-decompression dive times, this new carbon edition continues to carry what became the benchmark for military and professional divers. The bezel allows divers to calculate and monitor no-decompression dive times based on the official US Navy dive tables. It was the first time any brand had introduced such a depth gauge. It allowed the diver to quickly and precisely calculate the maximum time to be spent at a specific depth without requiring decompression stops on the way back to the surface. So, why is this important? âWhen you dive using compressed air to breathe, the body equalises it with the pressure underwater. When you ascend back to the surface, your body needs to gradually adjust again as the pressure changes. Thatâs what is meant by decompression,â explains Edöcs. âThe US Navy developed a table through which divers could calculate how much time they could spend at a specific depth, and safely return to the surface, decompressing during a gradual ascent.â He further elaborates, âIf you want to dive down to 18m, you can stay up to 50 minutes before having to return to the surface in one gradual ascent. If you stay longer than that, you have to make decompression stops on the way back up. If you plan to go down to 30m, for instance, the maximum time for a no-decompression dive is 25 minutes. Doxaâs dive bezel is used in conjunction with a table that indicates the no-decompression limit for each depth. You set the zero mark opposite the minute hand, and as time passes, the dive time is shown on the bezel. This depth gauge ensures maximum accuracy and helps make for a safe dive.â Supple and comfortable rubber straps that also feature a diverâs extension The Doxa Sub 300 Carbon comes with a choice of straps. The straps are either in blackâcombined with all dial coloursâor in colours that complement the dials of the navy, turquoise, yellow and orange editions. Each comes with Doxa markings on both sides. The soft rubber used makes the watch particularly comfortable to wear. Besides a black PVD-coated folding clasp highlighted with the exclusive Doxa âfishâ emblem, the strap features an adjustable diverâs wetsuit extension as well. MRP: â¹3,14,000
