Six trips to the Moon and the ultimate certification. The Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch is now a Maste

Six trips to the Moon and the ultimate certification. The Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch is now a Master Chronometer The world’s most loved watch that has made six trips to the Moon, now comes with the highest level of efficiency and accuracy in timekeeping While many fans consider its classic design untouchable, even sacred, Omega’s legendary Speedmaster Moonwatch has always kept pace with technological change. This year marks the start of a new chapter in its extraordinary history. This is not about total transformation. It is a continuation of the legacy and the next chapter for one of history’s most recognised chronographs. Here, you will see that the Moonwatch’s famous features remain unchanged, yet its standards of precision and anti-magnetism have been lifted to an exciting new level, giving customers the very best quality possible. MRP: Starts at ₹4,95,000 For more information, please call our Luxury Watch Helpline on [+91 8725028891](tel:08725028891), [+91 8725028882](tel:08725028882) [Click here to connect with us on WhatsApp]( A brief history of the Speedmaster Moonwatch and its first trip to space 1957 | The Speedmaster is born: Omega went on a mission to create a robust chronograph that would be waterproof, easy to read, easy to use and exceedingly precise. The Omega Speedmaster was the first watch with a tachymeter scale on its bezel, and was powered by the highly accurate calibre 321. 1963 | The NASA request: It was at the end of Project Mercury that NASA astronauts asked to be issued with a reliable watch for their manned missions into space, which led to a request for ‘high-quality chronographs’ in 1964 to watch manufacturers worldwide. Four responded—including Omega, who sent their third-generation Speedmaster chronographs (105.003). 1965 | The NASA qualification: Each watch that NASA received was tested under the most intense examinations imaginable—including thermal, shock, vibration and vacuum tests amongst others. Only the Omega Speedmaster survived these tests. It was declared ‘Flight-qualified for all manned space missions’ in March 1965. Just three weeks later, the Speedmaster officially went into space for the first time on the wrists of Virgil ‘Gus’ Grissom and John Young during the Gemini 3 mission. 1965 | The first American spacewalk: Leaving the safety of his Gemini capsule, Edward White became the first American to walk in space. Attached to his wrist with a special strap was an Omega Speedmaster 105.003, newly qualified by NASA. The Moonwatch and its many Moon landings 1965 | The Moonwatch design: It was the fourth-generation update of the Speedmaster that provided subtle but important changes to the chronograph’s design. This is the style that we still associate today as being the ‘original Moonwatch’. It was the first Speedmaster featuring an asymmetrical case with twisted lugs, done so to provide added protection for the crown and pushers. For the first time, the word ‘Professional’ was also printed on the dial. These models, known as 105.012 and 145.012 were the very watches worn by the Apollo 11 astronauts on the Moon. 1969 | The first Moon landing: At the same moment that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped onto the lunar surface for the first time in human history, the Omega Speedmaster became the first watch worn on the Moon. While Armstrong left his watch in the Lunar Module, Buzz Aldrin was photographed on the Moon wearing his Speedmaster. This inconic, historical photo, clicked by Armstrong, is seen here. (Photo courtesy: NASA) 1969-72 | Returning to the Moon: The Speedmaster Moonwatch has been worn by the crews of all six lunar landings in history. After that first Giant Leap with Apollo 11 in 1969, it again ventured beyond Earth, alongside the astronauts of Apollo 12, 14, 15, 16 and 17. 1970 | Rescuing Apollo 13: Apollo 13 should have been another Moon landing for NASA and the Omega Speedmaster. Instead, the mission was crippled by an on-board explosion, which plunged the crew into an uncertain future. Needing to desperately conserve power, their electronic equipment could not be used. Facing disaster, the Omega Speedmasters were the only means to precisely time a series of engine burns that repositioned the craft and enabled its safe return to Earth. 2020: Master Chronometer-certified It took four years of development to produce the next powerful calibre within the Moonwatch family, this time achieving Master Chronometer certification. Released in 2019, the Calibre 3861 has improved the power reserve, chronometric performance and magnetic resistance of the iconic movement, with many innovative features such as Omega’s revolutionary Co-Axial escapement as well as the silicon Si14 balance spring, which enable the calibre to pass the eight Master Chronometer tests. The Master Chronometer certification guarantees the highest standard of precision, chronometric performance and anti-magnetism in the industry. To achieve the mark, every single Moonwatch will undergo eight rigorous tests before it leaves the Omega factory. Overseen by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS), these tests will give each customer the confidence that the Speedmaster on their wrist has been thoroughly proven in the strictest environment, and will serve them faithfully for their very own missions—whether it’s on the Moon or closer to home. Why magnetism is a problem Technology such as phones, tablets, laptops and even hairdryers that can create magnetic fields that can permanently throw a timepiece out of rhythm. The new Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861 ensures that the legendary Moonwatch is unaffected by even the most extreme magnetic fields reaching 15,000 gauss (the same level as that of a typical MRI scanner). The details of Omega’s latest Master Chronometer Speedmaster Moonwatches For this exciting redesign, Omega has taken inspiration from the fourth-generation Moonwatch style—commonly referenced as the ST 105.012. Highly respected amongst watch collectors, the model is famed as one of the watches worn by Apollo 11 astronauts who landed on the moon in 1969. Its details incude: - The classic asymmetrical case with twisted lugs, as well as short and wide pushers - The step dial in black - The double-bevel caseback - The domed minute and seconds chronograph hands, which follow the bevel of the step dial - The famous 'dot over 90' (DON) and a dot diagonal to 70 on the anodised aluminium bezel ring MRP: ₹5,94,000 For more information, please call our Luxury Watch Helpline on [+91 8725028891](tel:08725028891), [+91 8725028882](tel:08725028882) [Click here to connect with us on WhatsApp]( The smallest updates that create maximum impact, yet retain the iconic Speedmaster look There are a few details in this edition that are just the same as they were in its predecessors, such as the small seconds at nine, and the 30-minute and 12-hour chronograph counters at three and six o’clock. However, a very subtle dial change can be found on the new minute track. Each second is now split by three divisions in accordance with the calibre 3861’s frequency. Another example of Omega’s exacting standards when it comes to precision. Another update is the bracelet. Around the wrist, Omega has integrated a fully-brushed bracelet with five arched links per row. This was the same design used for the recent Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Limited Edition watch (2019). Even the clasp is new, with a polished OMEGA logo on a satin-finished cover. Beautifully refined with a width of 15mm, it also includes two polished pushers in a new oval shape. And they all come with Omega’s five-year warranty. These four editions are: - 310.30.42.50.01.002: With the bracelet strap, and sapphire crystal for the glass and caseback - 310.32.42.50.01.002: With a black leather strap, and sapphire crystal for the glass and caseback - 310.30.42.50.01.001: With the bracelet strap, and hesalite crystal for the glass, and an embossed seahorse Speedmaster medallion on the caseback - 310.32.42.50.01.001: With a nylon fabric strap, and hesalite crystal for the glass, and the seahorse medallion caseback Sapphire crystal, while being scratch-resistant, would most likely break on the Moon, with the pressure exerted on the glass. Hesalite—a softer material—is shatter-resistant, and could hence remain intact in outer space. Therefore, the fourth-generation Speedmaster worn on the Moon in 1969 had a hesalite crystal glass and the seahorse medallion caseback.
