Inspired by a dinosaur, but futuristic in appeal. Introducing the Urwerk T-Rex: a truly wild thing The new 22-piece limited edition takes forward Urwerk’s satellite time display, in bronze, with a texture inspired by the 12ft dinosaur T-Rex is the name given to the latest iteration of Urwerk’s UR-100 collection. It carries both Urwerk’s genome in its satellite hours and that of its namesake in the primal texture of its reinforced hide of bronze. The UR-100V T-Rex is decidedly a creature you’ll want to tame, even if you wouldn’t want to stroke the extinct, eight-tonne tyrannosaurus rex that inspired it. The UR-100V T-Rex features Urwerk’s signature satellite wandering hours and a new type of selfwinding system. However its hide, in a mosaic of scales, has a somewhat more sensual texture. It’s a watch for those who relish the sensational—and the rare—for only 22 are made. Let’s take a closer look at this limited edition monster of a watch. The centrepiece—a bronze case with a texture inspired by the T-rex’s hide Three steps to achieve the textural splendour The tyrannosaurus rex-inspired case, 41mm in width, is in solid bronze that has undergone three successive treatments. The first lies in the unusual composition of the alloy which results in a delicate patina. The bronze is then in the hands of a computer-controlled milling station that carves the pattern of scales on the top and sides of the case. The final processes, sand-blasting and Urwerk’s proprietary method of biochemical burnishing, give the watch its distinctive colour. The scales, in the form of raised lozenges, cover the head and sides of this magnificent reptile and surround the flattened dome of sapphire crystal and the big knurled crown. The bevelled pyramids have been truncated and polished to present a surface that is pleasing to the touch. In PVD-blackened titanium of the caseback is completely skin-friendly, making it suitable even for those with sensitive skin. In Urwerk’s animal kingdom, the signature satellite indication does the talking. Three satellites, each of four hours, rotate on a three-armed carousel. In turn, each satellite, displaying the hour, carries a red pointer along a 60-minute scale. The regular orbit of the hours replicates the planetary dance in miniature. The hour and minute markers are coated adequately with Super-LumiNova, making the satellite display quite fascinating in the dark. The Mesozoic era meets the space age in a complication that’s truly out of this world Measuring the distance travelled by the Earth The watch is wound by a rotor, that moves as your wrist does. This is coupled to a device called the Windfänger that is specific to the UR-100 models. It is a planetary gear that limits the action of the rotor to avoid overwinding and excessive wear. The standout feature of the UR-100V T-Rex is one that puts other watches into the dinosaur age. Once the red pointer of the satellite hours has completed its 60-minute journey, it reappears to show the distance travelled by our planet. In the scale at nine o’clock on the case the pointer shows the 555.5km travelled by a point on the equator in a period of 20 minutes. The 20-minute scale on the other side of the dial shows the 35,742km that the Earth travels in its orbit around the sun in that time. It features 40 jewels, and beats at a frequency of 28,800vph, offering an adequate power reserve of 48 hours. The calibre connects with the components of the unconventional, open-worked display, including the aluminium satellite hours on the aluminium carousel, via a triple baseplate in the ARCAP alloy. The movement itself features various finishes, such as circular graining, sanding, shot peening and spotting, and chamfering on the screw heads. A fascinating paradox, and a beast of a timekeeper, limited to only 22 pieces When a watch displays such outer-worldly information as the Earth’s rotational and orbital distances, it’s ironic that the exterior is inspired by a creature that preceded the time when humankind thought the Earth was flat. It is a fascinating contradiction and perhaps even a commentary on time itself. This stunning rendition of Urwerk’s signature is more of a conversation starter than the ‘regular’ UR-100 watches that came before. And to make it even more special is the fact that there are literally only 22 pieces of it that exist. Few things are as exclusive as this. Watches that break the mould of what timekeeping can be are very few. Among those brands who have taken the timepiece completely out of the box are Urwerk—a brand that have taken haute horlogerie and watchmaking savoir faire, and have really pushed the envelope. Urwerk are unlike their contemporaries, even when it comes to their history. While many horological giants have centuries of watchmaking know-how giving them significant clout, Urwerk are still in their infancy—founded in 1997. However, from the very beginning, Urwerk didn’t want to be about just upholding traditional values. The founders had a truly futuristic vision that is still the driving force behind the design of its timepieces. Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei—master watchmaker and chief designer, respectively—envisioned a different approach to timekeeping and came up with the idea for Urwerk, and the atelier’s name is well thought-out. ‘Ur’ stands for the ancient Mesopotamian city where, for the first time in history, time was measured. From them, we also got the idea of dividing time units into 60 parts—a concept that would lead to our usage of 60-second minutes and 60-minute hours. The word ‘werk’ in German means ‘work’ in the context of creation and evolution. Perhaps, by coupling these two words, the watchmakers wanted the world to witness a different way of keeping time—and that’s exactly what they achieved. Sharply moving away from the conservative Swiss industry, their first releases, UR-101 and UR-102, were roaring successes. These two watches would look rather traditional if compared with Urwerk’s newer unveilings, but, as they say, great things come from the humblest of beginnings. Urwerk’s eccentric and crazy designs put them on the map, and here we are today when Urwerk is an independent brand to be reckoned with. Flesch reading score measures how complex a text is. The lower the score, the more difficult the text is to read. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
