The first Defy Classic in lightweight, robust carbon. Introducing the full-carbon Zenith Defy Classi

The first Defy Classic in lightweight, robust carbon. Introducing the full-carbon Zenith Defy Classic The ultra-light, super-strong and extremely distinguished carbon makes its debut in the Defy Classic collection, the three-hand icon from Zenith When the word Defy pops up in a conversation in the context of Zenith, the words you start to hear in conjuncture are futuristic, record-breaking and disruptive. This influential line of watches upholds Zenith’s proud traditions that are steeped in superlative timekeeping, but at the same time look to the future, in terms of materials, design and technology. The Defy we’re introducing today though is one that does things differently—a Defy that defies its own norms. While traditionally, the timepieces from this line were known for their extremely accurate high-frequency movements, this Defy focuses on extreme material science, along with retaining all the goodness that the collection brings to the table. Clad in a full-carbon jacket is the Zenith Defy Classic Carbon. Zenith and a look back at the Defy collection If one were to identify a collection of Zenith’s that best exemplifies the brand’s spirit of innovation and watchmaking excellence, it would certainly be the Defy line. Presenting sheer balance between the past and the present, every single timepiece that is a part of the Defy collection is a true vision of craftsmanship, precision and durability. What is known as a simpler member of the Defy collection (though one look at it would make you wonder if perhaps the definition of ‘simple’ has changed), the Zenith Defy Classic is an unconventional sports watch that grabbed eyeballs when it was first launched in 2018. It was actually called ‘Classic’ because it came after the Defy El Primero 21, which was a ground-breaking high-frequency chronograph that could measure 1/100th of a second. So when the brand were launching a less-complex Defy, they decided to call it ‘Classic’ to signify that it was a simple, three-hand watch, even if it did offer an extremely high level of accuracy. While the first Defy Classics were launched with simple, sunray-finished dials, it’s the skeletonised edition that has really stood the test of time, and has evolved over the years. Being offered initially in titanium and titanium-and-gold versions, it was eventually even realised in ceramic. Now the brand have taken the Defy’s material game to another level with the all-carbon construction of this model. It is lighter than even titanium, which makes it extremely comfortable to wear and carry. At the same time, it’s a sturdy material that is almost indestructible. It won’t dent like metal can; it won’t shatter like ceramic can. It won’t even scratch. What also makes it highly desirable is its unique and futuristic appeal. The material, owing to its advantages, is used extensively in aeronautics and motorsports. Yet its use in watchmaking has been fairly limited, relatively speaking. Lately, though, the watch industry has been increasingly embracing its superior properties. With the Defy Classic Carbon, not only is the case made from carbon, but even the 50-component integrated bracelet is made entirely from the material. This is an unprecedented technical feat that brings the total weight of the carbon bracelet edition to a mere 65g. To put that into context, it means that this watch is almost half the weight of its titanium counterpart, but is twice as strong. Boasting a full carbon construction, the angular lines of the case heighten the visual impact of the material. And in addition to the looks and the strength, the material is also corrosion-resistant. The challenges that come with working with carbon are two-fold. It first begins with crafting the material itself, which requires high temperature, higher pressure, and great skill. But after the material is made, the next hurdle is working with it, due to the very property that makes it desirable in the first place. Zenith, however, has wonderfully machined the tough material into Zenith’s classic tonneau-shaped case design and the result is outstanding. Signature Defy elements of the instantly identifiable Zenith Defy display Like many other Defy models, the Classic Carbon too features an open-worked dial. Highlighted with the five-prong star motif—which has become a Defy Classic signature—the dial steals the show. Open-worked dials often take a hit in legibility for obvious reasons. However, in this watch, the green Super-LumiNova in the dark, bold hands, paired with the wedge-shaped, ruthenium-plated hour markers, help a lot towards readability. The dial is protected by domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides. A classic calibre for accurate, reliable timekeeping Behind the star of the open-worked dial, you can see parts of the dark ruthenium-treated movement. This is the in-house Elite 670 SK calibre that has been a staple in Zenith’s line-up for many years. However, for the Defy Classic family, the movement was reimagined as a skeletonised one. While the name Defy Classic comes across as an oxymoron, as mentioned earlier, it’s to signify that it’s actually simpler than other Defy watches. It offers three-hand timekeeping and a date feature. The movement operates at 28,800vph and offers a minimum power reserve of 48 hours when fully wound. A handy strap or a truly defiant bracelet Here’s where the watch becomes truly special, if you go for the bracelet version. The use of carbon for a bracelet is practically unheard of otherwise. Painstakingly milling each bracelet segment, the links need to be connected in a way that rigidity and durability are ensured. This is a monumental challenge, only one that Zenith could tackle. Up until now, carbon watch bracelets have either been superficial plaques of the composite material fixed to a metal base or reserved for a handful of highly complicated watches produced in very small numbers. With the Defy Classic Carbon, it’s now available to a larger audience. Each link in the bracelet is a piece of solid carbon, moulded and milled with precision in such a way that it highlights the marbled layers or ‘strata’ of the carbon. The result is a bracelet that’s amazingly light and silky-smooth to touch. Alternatively, you can also opt for the tried-and-tested rubber strap that comes with a buckle in black DLC-treated titanium. The carbon bracelet version is available on special order. The advancements in technology allow us to create materials for the masses that were once only imagined for literal rocket science. Watchmaking in itself is a subject that looks at its past with rose-tinted glasses. However, that doesn’t mean that we should be limited by it. The Defy Classic Carbon is a great step towards normalising the use of special materials for a larger audience of watchmaking. And to make it more special, remember that due to its unique construction that results in a different marbled, camouflage pattern in every watch, no two timepieces will ever look identical.
