Carbon glass: 100x sturdier, 8x lighter than steel. Girard-Perregaux Laureato Absolute Crystal Rock?

Carbon glass: 100x sturdier, 8x lighter than steel. Girard-Perregaux Laureato Absolute Crystal Rock—the latest sensation in carbon glass A 100-piece limited edition watch made of carbon glass, which is eight times lighter and 100 times more resilient than steel Counted among some of the most highly regarded Swiss watchmaking maisons of all time, Girard-Perregaux have embodied a spirit of innovation, while developing remarkable watches and upholding a strong identity. From being among those watchmakers who believed in the revival of mechanical watchmaking despite the quartz crisis, to creating stellar horological innovations over the years, the brand’s values have stood the test of time. Here we bring to you the Girard-Perregaux Laureato Absolute Crystal Rock, their latest watch made of carbon glass, which made its market debut in the Absolute Rock last year. This swirling stunner adds to the Absolute watches that uphold material innovation at its finest. While the extremely resilient, yet lightweight carbon glass was first realised in black and blue, in this Crystal Rock limited edition—of 100 pieces—we see the innovative material in more neutral grey hues. Read on to discover how this timepiece exemplifies innovative watchmaking, with it's resilient properties. Carbon glass—100 times more resilient than steel, yet eight times lighter Here’s how the carbon glass construction makes this timepiece truly spectacular: - The manufacturing process of carbon glass is patented and involves extreme compression at high temperatures, wherein the glass fibres are injected into the carbon. This results in a solid block with optimised homogeneity, extreme resilience, and a smooth and even surface. - The manufacturers state that no other ‘carbon manufacturing technique matches this level of airtightness’, and that this ‘innovation guarantees full water resistance’. - The density of this carbon glass is about 1g/cu-cm, which is approximately the density of water, while steel and titanium have densities of 8g/cu-cm and 4.5g/cu-cm, respectively. Naturally, this means that it’s lighter than even titanium, which is considered in watchmaking to be the ultimate metal in terms of being lightweight, yet resilient. - One hundred times stiffer than steel, yet about one-eighth the density of steel, the robust carbon glass ensures that the watch sits light on the wrist. - Thanks to the integration of grey glass fibres into the carbon, the visual aesthetic of the timepiece is quite striking. - There is no way that the patterns formed by the glass fibre swirls in one case carved out of a carbon glass block can be the same as in another, giving each Laureato Absolute Crystal Rock a unique appearance, so to speak. - The gorgeous grey accents of the glass fibres give this watch a marvellous marble look, making a statement even with its subtle hues. It was characterised by an octagonal bezel and an integrated bracelet—seen even in today’s Laureatos. These traits were quite in line with several icons of watchmaking that were all launched during the golden era of sports watches—the 70s. These watches included the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, the Patek Philippe Nautilus and the IWC Ingenieur, among others. While the Laureato was launched three years after the Royal Oak, it came a full year before Patek Philippe or IWC got onto the bandwagon of contemporary luxury sports watches in steel, with the Nautilus and Ingenieur, respectively. The first Laureato was powered by a quartz chronometer movement—a choice triggered by the ‘quartz crisis’ that drove many manufacturers to develop their quartz capabilities. The name ‘Laureato’ came about following the then recent success of the iconic Dustin Hoffman-starring film The Graduate, which inspired an Italian distributor of the brand to suggest they call the new collection ‘Laureato’ (Italian for ‘graduate’). After seeing success for nearly three decades, the Laureato had wilted out of the Girard-Perregaux repertoire. However, when the brand revived the collection in 2016, it garnered renewed appreciation and soon became a mainstay of the brand, exemplifying their innovation in not just movements, but also in materials used. The year 2019 brought along with it the much-needed evolution of the collection, which came in the form of the bold, sporty and very modern Absolute, a revised take on the age-old design of the Laureato to cater to the tastes and sensibilities of today’s era. In the Laureato Absolute Crystal Rock, the watchmakers have infused into the classic design a futuristic appeal, thanks to the innovative carbon glass. It seemed only natural for them to explore a more neutral, crowd-pleasing grey, after the previous carbon glass edition had made an electric statement in blue. A sturdy, yet lightweight presence on the wrist The seemingly swirling grey accents on the case of the Laureato Absolute Rock have a magnificent, mesmerising quality that certainly enhances the visual richness of this watch. The chronograph pushers on the 44mm case feature a design updated from the standard Laureato chronograph silhouette, shaped to seamlessly frame the curves of the case on the right-hand side, making for a more streamlined appearance. This enhances the sleekness of this very modern interpretation of the Laureato. Further to that, the rubber strap with a fabric effect and grey stitching is integrated quite well with the case—thus exemplifying a major trend in fine watchmaking this year, while staying true to the Laureato collection. The strap comes with a folding clasp, in PVD-treated titanium, with a micro-adjustment system. The screwed-down carbon glass caseback sports the engraved Laureato Absolute logo. A visually-balanced chronograph dial, with a grey gradient finish Framed within the signature octagonal Laureato bezel in carbon glass, the dial has a typical chronograph display, visually, with 30-minute and 12-hour chronograph counters at nine and six, and the running seconds at three o’clock—each with snailed finishing. A subtle date window is placed at the half-past-four position. Take a closer look and you'll find that the dial is actually made of two hollowed plates superimposed, giving the watch a depth of appearance. The upper plate that we see more of has a radial gradient, with a slightly grained finish, which adds nuanced texture. A concave minute ring runs around the outer edge of the dial, while instead of raised appliques, each of the indices are cut out to reveal the plate beneath. And completing the dimensional splendour of the display are the baton-type hands and hour markers with Super-LumiNova for better readability in the dark. This self-winding mechanical movement comprises 419 components, including 63 jewels. It beats at a frequency: 28,800vph, and can work autonomously for at least 46 hours after being fully wound. VIDEO: Watch for close-up views of the swirling sensation that is the Girard-Perregaux Laureato Absolute Crystal Rock Carbon glass continues to make a statement even in its neutral avatar The Laureato Absolute Crystal Rock truly has the distinctive appeal of the sports watch icon that has had an illustrious past, while also retaining a modern and eye-catching identity of its own. While the blue Absolute Rock make a louder statement, this one tones things down with neutral grey, but still has a dashing presence on the wrist. The unique look of each carbon glass case—with its myriad grey glass fibre swirls—adds to the appeal of each watch in this 100-piece limited edition. The resilience of the material and the lightness of how it wears, despite its bold appearance, are qualities that any wearer would appreciate.
