The quintessentially British watches: now at Ethos. Bremontâs top five watchesâBritish horology at its finest True to their DNA in design and execution, Bremontâs watches represent British properness at its best. Now available in India, exclusively at Ethos In an industry dominated by key Swiss players, itâs always a refreshing change to come across brands that offer different perspectivesâgeographical, cultural and even socialâon the art of crafting fine timepieces. Bremont are among those who have carved their niche among a sea of watchmakers, catering to military and aviation enthusiasts; while staying true to their British origins. Founded in 2002, by brothers Nick and Giles English, who always wanted their brand to be boldly British, rugged and outstandingly accurate. They put the initial prototypes under some of the harshest conditions on earth, including extreme climate and height tests, and also invested heavily in research and development of their timepieces over the next five years. And then in 2007, they sold their first watch. Over the years, Bremont have catapulted themselves into the league of luxury watchmakers that offer reliable chronometers, despite being fairly young in the business. Here at Ethos, we have curated a list of some of the finest watches by Bremont, which have become a watchmaking force to reckon with in Britain. The five timepieces below are a symbol of durability, accuracy and precision. Each watch has a distinctive design and tells inspirational stories of human endeavour. The Broadsword Bronze: a modern spin on military watch history Bremont and Her Majestyâs Armed Forces In the 1940s, during World War II, the British Ministry of Defence decided to issue new watches to army personnel. So, rather than partnering with a specific brand, the ministry invited Swiss manufacturers, who could build a watch to the required standard. Eventually, 12 brandsâincluding Omega, Jaeger-LeCoultre and Longinesâturned up to accept the offer, resulting in the nickname âThe Dirty Dozenâ. These watches were delivered to the army personnel by 1945. Fast forward to 2019, Bremont began their partnership with the Ministry of Defence, and became the only luxury watch manufacturer allowed to feature the signs and badges of all three wings of the British military on their products. The company then launched their Broadsword collectionâinspired by the design of the three-hand âDirty Dozenâ watch. Now, expanding their collection, Bremont have introduced a new bronze edition of the Broadsword. The 40mm case of the timepiece is built from bronzeâa copper alloy with eight percent of tin. This makes the alloy highly corrosion resistant. The timepiece is available in three different dial coloursâslate; sotek, a dark military green/teal combo; and tobacco. It features a sub-seconds hand at six o'clock as well as multiple layers of luminous paint on the hands and dial. Seen here is the sotek edition. MRP: â¹2,94,000

After the enormous success of the E-Type, Jaguar launched their ultralight versions in 1963. Equipped with aluminium components, the car was intended to match the racing prowess of the D-Type, but it couldnât. Instead, it came to be known as the rarest of all E-Types. Jaguar had planned to manufacture 18 units of the model but decided to move on after making a dozen. Soon after the announcement, Bremont decided to build limited-edition watches inspired by the distinctive design of the E-Type. Made of 18-karat white gold, the six timepieces were sold to every owner of the racing car re-edition. Later, at Baselworld 2015, Bremont reissued the timepieces in steel and called them MKI and MKIIâthe latter a bi-compax chronograph version. And, the latest member of the Bremont Jaguar collection is MKIIIâa slimmer and more refined variant of its predecessors. It is powered by a COSC-certified BE-36AE calibre that can run autonomously for 38 hours. The movement powers the black tachometer-inspired dial design with a distinctive 'red line' quadrant between three and four oâclock, and a date window right below the Jaguar heritage logo at the six o'clock position. Housed in a 43mm polished steel case, the timepiece is fashioned with a tyre tread-style texture on the crownâan element borrowed from the original Lightweight E-Type. On turning the MKIII over, we see a vintage Jaguar logo accompanied by the E-Type labelâa reminder of the timepiece's inspiration. MRP: â¹3,82,000

The companyâs clocks can now be found at the Twickenham Stadium, a purpose-built rugby stadium in London. To celebrate this collaboration, the watchmaking company have unveiled the Bremont Rose. Housed in a 43mm hardened stainless steel case, the timepiece has rounded lugs, attached to either a blue leather strap or a steel bracelet. It has rounded pushers to control the functions of its integrated chronograph; an enlarged crown; and a flat bezel encircling the crisp white dial. One can see two sub-dials for the running seconds and the 30-minute chronograph counter, both embossed with white textured rosesâa reproduction of the English rose emblem of the rugby team. The dial also has printed black Arabic numerals at each hour position, and a date window at six oâclock. One can also see âEnglandâ written here right at the bottomâan indication as its country of origin instead of its usual âLondonâ print. Beating inside the timepiece is the COSC-certified BE-50AE calibre with a power reserve of 38 hours. The movement is visible through a sapphire crystal caseback, dominated visually by its rotor with a gold-coloured, engraved English rose and the text 'Swing low'âa reference to âSwing low, sweet chariotâ, England Rugbyâs stirring anthem. Commemorating the late Stephen Hawking, one of Britainâs greatest scientific heroes, each detail of the timepiece seems to pay homage to his work around time and space. Designed in collaboration with the Hawking family, the exquisite watch has a caseback comprising a piece of meteorite at its centreâdepicting the cosmos. Surrounding the meteorite are four discs made of wood taken from a desk at which Hawking worked from 1975 until his death. Meanwhile, the pattern of the constellation on the caseback shows the night sky above Oxford on January 8, 1942âHawking's birthday. The watchâs serial number is printed on paper from original copies of a 1979 seminal research paperâcommonly referred to as âthe nuts and bolts of gravityââwhich Hawking co-wrote with one of his longest-serving collaborators, Professor Gary Gibbons. The paper sought to understand the thermal properties of black holes. Adjacent to the serial number is the formula of the famous Hawking radiation theory which relates the temperature of a black hole to its mass. The Bremont Hawking runs on the calibre BE-33AE, offering a 42-hour power reserve, retrograde seconds at six o'clock on the dial, and a date window at 12 o'clock. A short section of the minute scale on the dial is marked off as âsunlight travelâ, symbolising the eight minutes and 20 seconds it takes for light from the sun to reach the surface of the earth. The timepiece comes in a 41mm stainless steel case accompanied by a matt-black dial with polished indexes and a 'black hole' spiral etching. MRP: â¹7,84,000

Two years later, the MBI was launched. The tough and meticulously built timepiece was a limited-edition available only to those pilots who had ejected from an aircraft using a Martin-Baker seat. Meanwhile, the company offered MBII to everyone. Now, Bremont have updated their core model by implementing a few design tweaksâmaking the timepiece bolder and stronger. The 43mm MBII is a perfect blend of ingenious engineering and elegant design. The hardened steel case has a unique 'Trip-Tick' build, comprising three piecesâthe bezel, the caseback, and a separate middle barrel made of aluminium. The timepiece runs on calibre BE-36AE, a COSC-certified chronometer movement, protected by a floating anti-shock movement mount and a soft-iron Faraday cage for anti-magnetic performance. The movement powers a perfectly legible dial with hour markers and hands coated with Super-LumiNova, making them easily legible to anyone sitting in a cockpit. Built to withstand the incredible stress of an actual ejection, MBIII lives up to Bremont's motto, 'Tested beyond endurance'. MRP: â¹3,92,000

Nick and his father, Dr Euan English, a Royal Air Force (RAF) veteran, were flying a vintage aircraft during the practice session of an air show, when suddenly, the plane in front of theirs suffered a misfire, and in a bid to avoid collision, they manoeuvred their 1942 WWII Harvard aircraft. Unfortunately, it went into an inverted spin and crashed near Maldon in Essex. Dr English died on the spot, while Nick suffered more than 30 broken bones, but survived. While coming to terms with their fatherâs death, Nick and Giles realised that time was too precious to waste, and decided to follow their passionâbuilding and repairing all kinds of mechanical devicesâand took over their fatherâs company, which restored vintage military planes. Apart from aircraft, the brothers were also obsessed with watchesâa passion instilled in them by their father. When they were young, Dr English would buy old clocks at auctions for Nick and Giles to tinker around with. This childhood enthusiasm culminated in the birth of a watchmaking company. However, the obvious question is, why the name Bremont? In the late 1990s, Nick and Giles were flying across France when they were caught in a horrible storm. Due to a rough-running engine, they had to make an emergency landing in a farmer's field, who fortunately offered them a barn to park their aircraft and a place to rest. In the course of this accidental meeting, the brothers realised that the farmer was a former pilot, and an engineer with a passion for horologyâjust like their father. Touched by his kindness and hospitality, the brothers decided to name their business after him. The farmerâs name was Antoine Bremont. Since Dr English had a major influence on Nickâs and Gilesâs lives, one understands the military influence on Bremontâs timepieces as well. The company are the only watch manufacturer allowed to feature the signs and badges of the Royal Navy, British Army and the Royal Air Force on their products. The Bremont Military and Special Projects Division work with elite military units worldwide to produce custom-made timepieces, which can endure the rigours of high altitudes and deep-sea diving. Apart from this, Bremont have associated with British luxury car manufacturer Jaguar, and also make watches for the likes of Boeing and the Regatta Oracle Team USA.
