The first in the series in blue and with a bracelet. Finally in blue: Carl F. Bucherer’s flagship chronograph, the Manero Flyback These models breathe new life into the successful series Founded in 1888, initially as retail establishment, by Carl Friedrich Bucherer, the first boutique of the now manufacturing company still serves as a major landmark in the gorgeous city of Lucerne in Switzerland. Most watch companies from Switzerland are based in the southwest part, or the French-speaking part of the country. Carl F. Bucherer is among the few brands based in the German-speaking part. The brand brand proudly continues to operate from the same location till date. A major part of the brand’s vision as it evolved was the idea of the Manero collection. The word ‘manero’ is derived from the Latin term manuaria, meaning ‘that which is led by the hand’, aptly signifying the brand’s fine watchmaking roots. From classical watches to more complex versions, this collection is a brand staple and has something for everyone. The versatile collection also pays homage to the early days of auto racing in the most sophisticated way possible, in its series of watches presenting a flyback chronograph complication—the Manero Flyback. Since its initial launch, Manero Flyback watches have been bestsellers for the brand, and they’ve been released in various colourways and material combinations. This year, the famed series has been unveiled for the first time in a gorgeous blue avatar, which you see here. How a flyback chronograph works If chronographs are complications, flyback chronographs are like ‘super-complications’. Unlike conventional chronographs—where it is necessary to press the buttons three times, to stop, reset, and restart, in order to measure successive time intervals—the flyback function allows the user to operate the chronograph without resetting it to zero every time. The chronograph hands fly back to zero, while the wheels continue to run in the movement—allowing the hands to resume as soon as the reset button is released. Dating back to the 1930s, flyback chronographs are complications only a handful of watchmakers have mastered, and are mainly used by professionals such as pilots and professional race-car drivers, for whom every split-second is precious. The quick reset of the flyback function in this particular watch is controlled by a column wheel and actuated by the pump pusher at four o’clock. This enables the user to measure multiple time intervals in quick succession. Carl F. Bucherer had never attempted this mechanism before in any of their watches, and spent years developing it in an in-house movement. And the result of this labour is an extremely superior chronograph of the Manero Flyback. What sets the Manero Flyback apart is a sophisticated chronograph movement, coupled with a flyback function nestled in elegant cases. What makes the Manero Flyback special While the Manero collection has presented some of the most diverse offerings of the brand, including a moon phase complication, a perpetual calendar, and even a tourbillon, the classic column-wheel flyback chronograph is arguably the most highly regarded. The distinctive visual personality of the Manero Flyback comes through with every impressive version in the range. First launched in 2016, the newer models of Manero Flyback continue the tradition of fine watchmaking by the manufacturers from Lucerne as refined and technically advanced chronographs. The rounded lines, classic feel, well-balanced and finished dial, and a nice automatic chronograph with the flyback function make the Carl F. Bucherer Manero Flyback a great timepiece. With hues that soothe the eyes, a classic design with nuanced details, and an advanced flyback chronograph mechanism, the Manero Flyback watches are rather impressive. This year, the watchmaker introduced two new blue dial versions in the series, one paired with a matching blue textile strap and the other with a stainless steel bracelet. Bucherer Manero Flyback is a great combination of modernity and retro elements, of elegance and casualness, or robustness and refined details. It isn’t a typical sport watch, but it isn’t a dress watch either. It sits right in the middle as a contemporary, urban model for daily use. In the present attire, the case is made of stainless steel with an alternation of polished surfaces—seen on the casebands, bezel, pushers and crown—and brushed surfaces, which are on the top of the lugs. It measures a respectable 43mm diameter and is 14.45mm in height, making this a watch with a masculine presence. Though slightly on the larger side, the tapered lugs make the timepiece sit comfortably even on smaller wrists. The case is beautifully detailed, with curved lugs enhanced by a bevel, old-school mushroom-type pushers, and a smooth polished bezel. Overall, the design is very pleasant and the execution precise and solid. Adding to the impressive structure of the Manero Flyback is the domed sapphire crystal glass, a staple of the Manero collection, which adds dimension and a layered visual appeal. The polished push buttons of the chronograph add to the classic character of the watch, while being highly functional with their large surface area. Adorning the case is the signature Carl F. Bucherer crown, marked with the brand’s monogram. Carl F. Bucherer loves to showcase the movement beating at the heart of almost all of their watches. The sapphire crystal see-through caseback of the Manero Flyback invites the wearer to enjoy the inner workings of their manufacture movement. The decoration on the movement makes the view through the caseback a treat in itself. This flyback chronograph watch truly is the complete package. The case is water resistant to 30m. However, this new blue dial model is mounted on a casual, summer-friendly textile strap with a folding clasp. What’s more, a new steel bracelet with a nine-link architecture, mixing polished and brushed links, has been added to the options. Flexible, luxurious and comfortable—and equipped with a concealed buckle—this bracelet changes the personality of this chronograph watch completely, without becoming too sporty either. At the same time, it gives the collection wider appeal, since all-steel chronographs are certainly among the most popular watch genres out there. The execution, like the rest of the watch, is top-notch. Bucherer’s obsession with depth and detail, with elements such as the finishing on the sub-dials, applied indexes and even the brand’s emblem matching the case material. The detailing on the dial reflects the craftsmanship that goes into making the Manero Flyback. A closer look at the dial will reveal the ‘snailed’ concentric-circle decoration on the sub-dials, lending textural splendour to the overall visual appeal. New colour aside, the dial retains its 1940s inspiration, with a two-tone pattern—opaline in the centre, with a brushed hour chapter ring—and its clearly defined sectors. Combined with the depth and visual layers, the lance-style hands presented on the dial showcase the aesthetics of the Manero, synonymous with the collection for years. The bi-compax layout with deeply recessed sub-dials for the seconds and the elapsed minutes is still present, as well as the rhodium-plated applied indexes and open-worked hands. The dial is framed by a tachymeter scale and all the inscriptions are done in white, providing great contrast. A date is placed at six o’clock, retaining the symmetry of this bi-compax display. Crafted out of stainless steel, these hands are complemented by the smaller sub-dial hands as well. [Click here to connect with us on WhatsApp.]( A highly complex movement with a flyback chronograph The new Manero Flyback is equipped with their in-house calibre CFB 1970 developed by La Joux-Perret. This flyback chronograph has the ability to time a second interval even when the chronograph hands are still running, simply by pressing the reset button at four o’clock. It also replaces the cam-lever architecture by a more desirable column wheel, which is easily visible through the caseback. The movement's components are finely decorated with Côtes de Genève and perlage patterns. Incorporating 25 jewels, it operates at a frequency of 28,800vph, offering a standard power reserve of 42 hours. These brilliant blue versions proudly take the Manero legacy forward The classic Manero Flyback has become one of the brand’s cornerstone models, thanks to its design, which blends retro and modern elements, and of course, the flyback complication. These newest models of Manero Flyback continue the tradition of fine watchmaking by the watchmakers from Lucerne as refined and technically advanced chronographs. The rounded lines, classic feel, well-balanced dial, and a versatile automatic chronograph with the flyback function—all make for a success story that several watch enthusiasts and collectors wish to be a part of.
