The Girard-Perregaux world timer
Set India time at the centre, with all major time zones around it—the perfect watch for the globally-connected Indian
With an uninterrupted history going back to the 18th century—1791 to be precise—Girard-Perregaux is among the oldest watch manufacturers that have had an uninterrupted run in watchmaking. Based in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, they have to their credit over 100 watchmaking patents and an equally compelling catalogue of fine timepieces, ranging from high-complication novelties to more accessible, daily-wear pieces. Among them is their sophisticated line of dress watches—the 1966 collection. The beginnings of this contemporary classical line go back to a watchmaking breakthrough that the manufacture made in 1957—the Gyromatic, which housed an ultrathin self-winding mechanical movement, allowing the case to be remarkably thin. The concept of the Gyromatic was developed further and reached its peak in 1965, and in 1966, the brand introduced the world’s first high-frequency self-winding movement—beating at 36,000vph. This ground-breaking calibre became the inspiration for an entire collection named after the year it was unveiled. Modern-day editions of the 1966 collection pay tribute to the innovative spirit of the maison, even as they offer classical, archetypal designs. In addition to thin and refined dress watches, the 1966 range also includes pieces featuring complications such as tourbillons, chronographs, and minute repeaters. However, the most useful complication to make its way to the collection was Girard-Perregaux’s very own world timer—the WW.TC (Worldwide Time Control), known for its ring around the dial featuring names of cities corresponding to time zones. It allows you to make the India time the central focus of the watch with all 24 time zones circled around it. It's truly the perfect watch for any successful Indian.
Let’s take a closer look at the Girard-Perregaux 1966 WW.TC.
A brief history of the Girard-Perregaux WW.TC
Girard-Perregaux presented its very first world timer wristwatch in 1990, following which it came to dedicate a whole collection to world timers in 2000, the Worldwide Time Control, or the WW.TC as it is better known. The first WW.TC, sporting a distinct design, turned out to be hugely successful. It always featured a second crown, placed on the left side of the case, which served to rotate the world timer’s city disc. It also featured a chronograph and a date, besides the 24-hour world time indication. Eventually, the brand came to equip the WW.TC with a power reserve indicator, a tourbillon and a perpetual calendar with a moon phase display, over several models. The series also introduced a popular version that indicated the times of trading at the stock exchanges of London, New York, Tokyo and Hong Kong—referred to as the WW.TC Financial, while other significant releases in the series include the WW.TC Lady 24 Hour Shopping and the WW.TC Financial Bombay Stock Exchange.
The WW.TC was introduced in the 1966 collection more recently. It turned out to be the sleekest, cleanest, most user-friendly rendition of the complication—aside from being very wearable—hence becoming the most desirable version of the series yet.
How to set this watch with India time at the centre and 24 time zones around it
Besides the main time-adjusting crown at the conventional three o’clock position, there is a crown diametrically opposite at nine. This crown is used to move the city disc. So all one has to do is use the crown at three o'clock to set the Indian time or local time shown as the main time display at the center of the watch. The crown at nine o'clock can then be used to set any of the cities with its corresponding time.
So for example if it 5:30pm in India, we will use the crown at three o'clock to set the Indian time to 5:30 at the centre. Now we know that Dubai has 1.5-hour difference and therefore we will use the crown at nine o'clock to rotate the city disc until Dubai is aligned over 4:00pm (1600h) on the 24-hour peripheral disc display. And its done! Once set, the 24-hour display rotates along with the local hour display to ensure all 24 time zones remain coordinated. Impressively user-friendly, both the time and reference city can be set in either direction.

A silver-toned dial with 24 major time zones that can be set around Indian Standard Time at the centre
The opaline, silver-toned dial presents a refined design, and elegant restraint in its display. This modern, pared-down interpretation of the Worldwide Time Control does away with the chronograph and date, which were prominent features in previous WW.TC watches. In the innermost part of the dial, we see applied baton-style metallic hour markers, leaf-shaped hands to complement them, in addition to a small seconds sub-dial with a blued hand, at six o’clock. Outside this is a 24-hour display, half of which is coloured dark to roughly indicate the night-time hours in a given time zone. The time zones are indicated in the outermost portion of the dial, via the names of 24 representative cities. This allows you to see the time in all major time zones at a glance.

A gorgeous 40mm case with two crowns
The 1966 WW.TC comes in 18-karat rose gold or in steel, with an alligator leather strap. The latter is available with a steel bracelet as well. The 40mm round case features a slim, polished bezel, with the movement visible through the sapphire crystal caseback. The case is only 12mm thick, and easily slips under the cuff. Lending the watch visual symmetry are the two screw-down crowns flanking the case, both engraved with the ‘GP’ emblem. One crown operates the local time or India time at the centre of the watch while the other rotates the peripheral city disc.

The world timer is more useful than a travel-time watch.
To be clear, this watch is not strictly a travel-time watch, where one can shift time zones easily or one that shows home time. Those are useful when one is travelling. This Girard-Perregaux instead shows all time zones when you're at home and even when you're travelling. This is one of the reasons collectors prefer a world timer to a travel time watch.
Stripped down to just the essentials, this world timer is as sleek and wearable as it gets. With it, you get unmatched functionality with minimal visual baggage, along with a complication that is useful not just for travellers, but even those who frequently interface with people in different time zones. Sporting the Girard-Perregaux 1966 WW.TC on your wrist means that you’re spared the trouble of looking up the time in another zone on your phone, or mentally counting the difference. It sure is a very useful watch in this day and age.
