A full matte-grey limited edition in titanium. Zenith El Primero Defy 21 X Land Rover Defender The world's fastest chronograph meets the toughest car in the world The close link between cars and watches is fascinating, considering the very different purposes they serve. Yet we see that the horological world draws a lot of parallels with the world of automobiles. Just like a car, a watch has an ‘engine’—its movement. The mainspring barrel could be likened to a car’s fuel tank and battery, the case can be likened to the chassis, and so on. In both these cases, a lot of small, individual parts come together to create a machine with pure mechanical harmony. These easy comparisons could be one reason why they attract similar minds. It’s no wonder then that the collaboration between Swiss watchmaker Zenith and high-end sports vehicle maker Land Rover is extremely special to horological enthusiasts. Both are legendary brands that are celebrated for their design, innovation, and luxury. Much to our delight, they forged a partnership a few years ago, and have presented a few exceptional timepieces since then, which showcase the brands’ shared values of advanced technology, innovation and design. Here’s introducing the latest product of this collaboration—presenting the new Zenith El Primero Defy 21 Land Rover Edition! In a nutshell, the top features of this watch include: - A legendary El Primero movement beating within - A column wheel chronograph accurate to 1/100th of a second—a true visual delight to watch - Two escapements—one for timekeeping and one for the chronograph - A power reserve display for the chronograph - A 44mm matte-grey micro-blasted titanium case - A complimentary strap—a rubber 'adventure' strap in addition to the canvas 'country' strap - It is designed in collaboration with Zenith and design cues from the new Land Rover Defender are seen throughout the watch in the rotor, dial, power reserve display, crown, hands, case and strap - It is a numbered limited edition of 250 pieces globally Zenith teams up with Land Rover to offer the fourth iteration of its special edition series—the 250-piece limited edition El Primero Defy 21 Initially introduced at the LVMH Group’s Watch Week in Dubai back in January 2020, this India release of the Defy 21 coincides with the release of the next-generation Land Rover Defender 90, which was first unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year. Closely aligned with the Land Rover’s design cues, this Defender-inspired timepiece exhibits an interesting ‘super-matte’ aesthetic, which is vastly different from the ‘rugged chic’ design sensibilities that dominated the earlier Range Rover editions of Zenith-Land Rover collaboration. Since the partnership began in 2016, it has resulted in four timepieces: two from the Chronomaster collection, one Defy Classic, and now the new Defy 21. This timepiece, limited to 250 watches, redefines Zenith’s resolutely 21st-century chronograph with a raw and minimalistic look, celebrating the Defender 90 as a stellar SUV of a new era. The matte-grey casing in micro-blasted titanium lends it a stealth appeal The 44mm tonneau-shaped case is a sublime monochromatic vision with a matte finish, which not only enhances its sportiness but also echoes the muted tones and colour palette of the new Defender 90. The distinctive Zenith Defy case shape, coupled with integrated ‘lugs’ and faceted case-bands, is crafted in matte-grey micro-blasted titanium—case, caseback, bezel, pushers and crown. The micro-blasted titanium absorbs light from all angles, intensifying the visual impact of the case’s faceted surfaces. The sporty and rugged appeal of the timepiece is further enhanced by the stylish chronograph pushers and the orange-accented crown. The case also offers a significant water resistance of 100m. The clear caseback allows you a glimpse of the movement that proudly displays elements of the Land Rover Defender SUV. One of these spokes on the rotor is engraved with the official Land Rover logo. ‘Land Rover’ is highlighted further, on the perimeter of the exhibition caseback with an engraving, along with the exact numbered piece out of the limited edition of 250 pieces. Both the straps come with double-folding buckles in micro-blasted titanium. [Click here to connect with us on WhatsApp.]( The new linear Defy 21 power reserve display on a soft grey dial The muted matte-grey dial with a velvet finish, appears as one with the case, while the markers and inscriptions are in white, thus ensuring impeccable contrast and hence, optimum legibility. The luminescent material on the three sub-dial hands, and the graduated one-to-100 scale on the outer ring use a subtle pop of orange as seen inside the new Land Rover Defender 90. A first for the Defy 21, the power reserve indicator for the 1/100th-of-a-second chronograph is executed in the form of a linear display instead of using a hand. This is positioned towards the top of the dial just beneath the Zenith logo, closely resembling the fuel gauge on the Land Rover’s instrument cluster. The dial also features a printed white minute ring and three sub-dials—for running seconds, and 60-second and 30-minute chronograph counters, at nine, six, and three o’clock, respectively. The two skeletonised hands for hours and minutes are equipped with Super-LumiNova on their tips, while the central chronograph hand that measures 1/100th of a second carries that Zenith star emblem in the form of a counter-weight. [Click here to connect with us on WhatsApp.]( A legendary El Primero movement within—a 1/100th-of-a-second, high-frequency chronograph calibre featuring two escapements and a power reserve for the chronograph The 21st century evolution of the world’s most famous movement The El Primero is the world's most famous chronograph. First launched in 1969, it was the world's first automatic chronograph. In fact, El Primero in Spanish means 'the first'. When it was first introduced, it came out as an integrated chronograph (built from scratch to include the complication, unlike the modular varierty, in which a chronograph module is an addition to a base movement). This original movement had a column wheel and was accurate to 1/10th of a second. It worked at a very high frequency to maintain stability and accuracy. It revolutionalised the watch industry and the movement was used by the world's biggest brands in the most famous chronographs of all time. Today the El Primero has been upgraded to the El Primero 21 and this watch uses the El Primero 9004. It is still an integrated chronograph with a column wheel but the accuracy is now 1/100th of a second making it the world's fastest chronograph in production. Hence, it is appropriate to say that the pièce de résistance of the Defy 21 Land Rover is the movement. This evolution of the legendary El Primero automatic movement integrates two escapements. While the first one beats at 36,000vph and caters to the main timekeeping function, the second runs at a staggering 3,60,000vph, and is exclusively responsible for the chronograph. It runs only once the chronograph pusher has been actuated. This second ultra-high beat rate is what allows the chronograph to measure elapsed times with the incredible accuracy of 1/100th of a second. To view the chronograph in action is a delight! The hyperactive central chronograph hand goes around the dial once per second in a smooth movement and a track of every 1/100th of a second on the inner flange allows precise calculations. The chronometer-certified movement promises up to 50 hours of power when fully wound, which is extremely impressive considering its high functionality. The chronograph has a power reserve display of its own, which can be seen on the dial. [Click here to connect with us on WhatsApp.]( A true horological heavyweight that gives a nod to the all-terrain vehicle With this limited edition chronograph conceptualised in collaboration with the British SUV specialist, Zenith has taken the classically purpose-built, no-nonsense spirit of a Land Rover Defender 90 and assembled it in a sparsely branded titanium case with a dial to match. It is not only ultra-light on the wrist, but is also dramatically understated without compromising on the visually stark design language. With the exception of the caseback, which features the subtle branding cue indicating the collaboration, the watch hardly makes any hype about being a special edition. The very fact that it foregoes any specific Land Rover or Defender call-outs on the dial, will particularly strike a chord with watch collectors who do not have a Land Rover in their garage. However, it still manages to balance its ruggedness with the visual perspective of the new Defender, while retaining the famed El Primero movement as the tour de force.
