Louis Moinet creates two limited edition watches with fragments from the moon and Mars
Two exquisite watches featuring pieces from actual lunar and Mars meteorites
A skilled craftsman and a distinguished watchmaker, Louis Moinet was also a renowned astronomer who, in his exploration of the cosmos, rigorously researched the mechanisms of time while admiring its ineffable beauty. The watchmaking of Louis Moinet—the brand named after the astronomer—is not just about high precision, but is also thoughtful and philosophical, with something of an astronomical bent. This has resulted in beautiful expressions, especially in the Cosmic Art collection, comprising the Moon and Mars models, among others.
These Cosmic Art watches are in keeping with Louis Moinet’s characteristic neo-classical, but resolutely contemporary aesthetics, pairing complexity with legibility. It boasts out-of-the-world creations incorporating extra-terrestrial fragments and genuine materials acquired from space expeditions, complemented by inputs from legendary cosmonauts and astronauts.
We present to you two exquisitely crafted limited edition pieces from this collection: the Moon and the Mars.
Moon—a fitting tribute to a brilliant piece of literature
In the 19th century, author Jules Verne had created quite a stir in the world of speculative fiction with his landmark work of literature, Around the Moon. The sequel to Verne’s From the Earth to the Moon (1865), this science fiction novel that was released in 1869 continues the trip to the moon that saw only its beginning in the first book. It is interesting to note that 100 years before Apollo XI first landed on the moon, Verne had anticipated the journey. There is no historical evidence to suggest that Verne and Louis Moinet had ever met, but come to think of it, we cannot rule out the possibility altogether, given that both were men of science with very advanced astronomical knowledge—Moinet to conduct his scientific research, Verne for the purposes of research for his written works. Besides, both lived in the same place during the same period (1848 to 1853), probably belonging to the same circles, including the French Academy of Sciences, and frequently visited the same people, such as the famous astronomer Lalande.
Come 2019, Ateliers Louis Moinet launched what can be touted as a befitting celebration of the 150th anniversary of Around the Moon—the limited edition Moon, scaling greater heights of astronomy.
The dial that reproduces the surface of the moon and features an actual piece of the moon in it
What immediately captures one’s attention about this one-of-its-kind timepiece is its appearance depicting the moon’s surface. A capsule containing a fragment of a lunar meteorite sits at the three o’clock position against the brass dial designed to mimic the surface of the moon with accurate depictions of its best-known craters, Gassendi, Tycho, and Cassini. It is also the first creation by atelier Louis Moinet to feature Roman numeral hour markers, which appear to be suspended in mid-air, as if weightless—further highlighting the lunar inspiration.
The open-worked section of the Moon’s dial, between eight and 12 o’clock, reveals the calibre ticking at the heart of this timepiece. The escapement and the offset seconds hand are displayed in all their glory, while being carefully positioned so as to reveal every detail of the movement.
The large aperture position at nine o’clock reveals the beauty of the LM45 calibre inside, and the escapement, while the small seconds sub-dial floats right above it. The piece of an actual lunar meteorite makes a glorious presence inside the three o’clock capsule. The brand’s signature open-worked Gouettes de Rosée hands add to the overall aesthetics of the dial, besides the hour markers, and the concave inner bezel with the minute markers. The brand logo makes a subtle presence just above six o’clock.

Exploring the movement
The Moon timepiece is powered by the high-precision automatic LM45 movement, beating at a frequency of 28,800vph and offering a power reserve of 48 hours. It features a blue oscillating weight decorated with a Clous de Paris finish. Besides comprising 22 jewels, the calibre is adorned with Côtes de Genève motif, diamond-polished facets and circular grained wheels. The mainplate is embellished with perlage decoration and the bridges incorporate engraved symbols.
A fresh perspective on the quintessential Louis Moinet ‘neo’ case
The Moon is housed in a sumptuous ‘neo’ case—crafted in stainless steel with a diameter of 43.2mm—which blends the flamboyance of the atelier and the magical charm of the novelist. The stepped bezel is composed of two parts, with the upper section affixed to the rest of it with screws. This even reflects a hint of steampunk and its retro-futuristic design which is often associated with and a representation of Jules Verne’s works. The open sections near the lugs and the curved caseband, juxtaposed with comparatively straight bridge sections, bestow a handsome appearance.
The watch is worn on a blue alligator leather strap, which complements the blue elements on the dial.

The Louis Moinet Mars Limited Edition—bringing the red planet closer to your wrist
If you are interested in astronomy, you must be familiar with the theory that Martians built canals on Mars as a means of irrigating their planet. Even though in today’s times, we look back at the idea with fond amusement, it was a theory that was taken a little more seriously by one Percival Lowell. Born in 1855 and thus a contemporary of Louis Moinet, Lowell set his heart on taking forward the work begun by Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli, who thought that the dark marks he had observed on Mars were a series of lakes and canals. With the Mars limited edition, created by atelier Louis Moinet, this romantic vision of astronomy finds a spectacular expression.

A dial that reproduces the surface of Mars and carries an actual piece of Mars in it
Limited to 60 pieces, this steel timepiece faithfully reproduces the surface of Mars, complete with its legendary volcanoes. The brass dial features a genuine Mars meteorite fragment in a capsule at the three o’clock position. If you are an astronomy buff you might recognise the shield volcanoes represented—the Olympus Mons in the centre, the Ascraeus Mons between one and two o’clock, the Pavonis Mons between four and five o’clock, and the Arsia Mons between five and six o’clock. Thanks to expert craftsmanship, each crater has been individually reproduced on the dial with remarkable precision, so as to resemble the Martian landscape.
Besides the dial itself being open-worked, this timepiece also sports open-worked Roman numeral hour markers with a satiny finish that appear to be suspended in mid-air. The hours and minutes are displayed via Gouttes de Rosée hands—a characteristic feature of Louis Moinet timepieces that exude notable style while lucidly articulating the time. Between eight and 12 o’clock, you can enjoy a clear partial view of the movement inside, as the skeletonised section reveals the escape wheel, the pallet lever, and the screwed balance.

A complex case structure and a movement wound by a copper-hued rotor
As in the Moon timepiece, this one too is powered by the LM45 calibre, which offers 48 hours of autonomy. The differentiator in this rendition of the movement is the colour of the oscillating weight, which echoes the copper hue of the dial.
The brand uses the term ‘neo’ to describe their unusual case construction. The Mars timepiece makes use of the same case, in stainless steel. With a diameter of 43.2mm, the case is not only highly polished but also flaunts an elegant, almost delicate appearance, thanks to the curved sides, which step away from the lugs, offering lateral spaces. The lugs are joined with two bridge sections.
The brown alligator leather strap completes the look.

About atelier Louis Moinet and its place in the Guinness Book Of World Records
Founded in Saint-Blaise, Neuchâtel, atelier Louis Moinet is a fully independent firm that was established to revive the work and art of Louis Moinet (1768-1853). A watchmaker, scholar, painter, sculptor, and teacher, all rolled into one, Moinet also authored the Traité d’Horlogerie, a watchmaking treatise published in 1848 that continued to be a definitive work of reference for a century. He is also credited with the invention of the first chronograph ever, in 1816, which has been certified by the Guinness World Records. This distinction came as part of a detailed six-month investigation conducted by the Guinness World Records, calling for the provision of technical diagrams, historical proof, the written testimony of a large number of independent experts, and a whole host of photos and video material. The award came in at a very significant year, when the brand was celebrating the bicentenary of the invention of the chronograph. Moinet is also considered as a pioneer in the use of very high frequency (216,000 vibrations per hour) movements.
This independent company was established by Jean-Marie Schaller with the aim of producing watches in the spirit of Louis Moinet—a blend of art and technology. Today, atelier Louis Moinet is perpetuating this legacy through its mechanical timepieces that are produced as one-of-a-kind models or limited editions only. The timepieces belong to two categories: Cosmic Art and Mechanical Wonders. Louis Moinet creations stand apart due to their use of unusual and rare components, such as extra-terrestrial meteorites or prehistorical materials. This has also enabled Louis Moinet to win some of the most coveted honours around the world, including a UNESCO Award of Merit, six Red Dot Design Awards (including one ‘best of the best’ award), a Horological Creativity Contribution Award, gold and bronze medals in the International Chronometry Competition, 10 Good Design Awards, three Middle East Watch of the Year Awards, two Robb Report ‘Best of the Best’ Awards, three German Design Awards, a Moscow Grand Prix Award, and a ‘chronograph of the year’ distinction from Begin magazine, Japan.
Driven by the core values of creativity, exclusivity, art and design, the brand has carved out a niche in the horological world with its uniquely creative mechanical approach combined with bespoke fine watchmaking. These two models bear testimony to that. Their richly detailed aspects minus unnecessary decoration make these limited edition pieces a treasure for any watch enthusiast with an eye for distinctive design.
