Urwerk launches in India, exclusively at Ethos Watch Boutiques
Urwerk is an icon of everything good in the world of watchmaking—it is innovative, independent and unforgettable. Urwerk has truly taken the world of watchmaking by storm. Its unique manner of displaying time through mechanical horological 'satellites' is not only an icon for watchmaking but a true symbol of innovative design in totality. At its core, Urwerk creates watches that look like spaceships for your wrists.
The story of the Urwerk brand goes back to 1997, when watchmaker Felix Baumgartner, his brother Thomas and designer Martin Frei were united by their common passion for measuring and portraying time. Founded with the goal of designing and crafting haute horlogerie timepieces that epitomise the perfect fusion of traditional mechanical watchmaking and a futuristic design, they created a signature look that took high horology away from regular designs in watchmaking and presented a visually exciting, daring, new look.
Urwerk derives its name from the town of Ur in Mesopotamia and ‘werk’, which, in German, basically stands for work in the form of creation and evolution, while shaping, forging, and arousing emotions.
Having forayed into the world of watches as a group of artists who were keen to interpret time in a different manner, Urwerk creations blend the principles of fine mechanical watchmaking with the spirit and culture of our times and a modern outlook. Over the years, Urwerk has earned critical acclaim for its unique interpretations of time, while its innovative timekeeping instruments have has won several awards at the GPHG (Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève), watchmaking’s most prestigious awards, winning prizes for mechanical exception (2014), best design (2011), best innovation (2014), among others.
As Ethos brings Urwerk’s watches to India, you can now own some of the Swiss manufacture’s finest offerings. We have curated a list of five exceptional watches from the brand’s signature UR-Satellite collection. Read on to explore these extraordinary timepieces, while we take this opportunity to wish you good health and happiness in these trying times.
UR-Satellite UR-100 GunMetal SpaceTime
The newest watch from Urwerk focuses on the concept that one is never stationary. It records your movement through space and time by measuring the distance that you have travelled vis-Ã -vis the Earth's rotation on its axis as well as its revolution around the sun. This is a world first indeed.
Derived from Urwerk’s SpaceTime models, this watch is from a limited edition of only 25 pieces. The case in titanium and stainless steel, with a PVD finish in gunmetal, measuring 41mm by 49.7mm, can resist water up to 30m. Ticking within is the self-winding UR 12.01 movement, with the bidirectional rotor governed by a profiled airscrew, known as the Windfänger. What sets this timepiece apart is that it displays the hours with three rotating orbital ‘satellites’; alongside a red pointer that indicates the minutes. The astronomical distance indicators will intrigue any horological aficionado, with the scale at 10 o’clock showing the distance travelled by Earth’s rotation on its own axis, which is 555km every 20 minutes, while the scale at two o’clock indicates the distance travelled by the Earth around the sun, which is 35,740km every 20 minutes. The hour and minute indicators are in vivid green, both finished with Super-LumiNova, and the distance is displayed in bright white. The movement also promises a power reserve of 48 hours. The grey fabric strap completes the look of this unique timepiece.

UR-Satellite UR-105 CT Streamliner
What immediately catches your attention about this timepiece is its remarkable octagonal shape with deep grooves along its length, with the geometric angularity and symmetry heavily bearing Art Deco influences. The case in titanium and mirror-polished steel, measuring 39.5mm by 53mm, is water resistant up to 30m. Powered by the UR 5.03 calibre, with the self-winding system governed by twin turbines, the timepiece offers a power reserve of 48 hours. Slide the catch on the top of the case and you can glance into the mechanism of the UR-105 CT, which comprises a new wandering hour indication based on an open-worked carousel that carries the four satellites, each bearing three numerals for the hours. The hours successively sweep past the minutes scale for an analogue and digital display of the time. The dial also features the power reserve indicator and digital seconds, indicating tens of seconds. Thanks to the intricate mechanism, each of the open-worked markers weighs less than 1/10th of a gram. This timepiece is meant for the most avid watch enthusiasts.

UR-Satellite UR-105 Turbine Automatic ‘Urwerk Knight’
The UR-105 TA, also referred to as the ‘Urwerk Knight’, revisits the brand’s iconic satellite indication, which has been an emblematic and instantly recognisable signature element of the brand for 18 years. This time in a titanium-and-rose-gold case, measuring 39.5mm by 53mm, holds the UR 5.03 automatic movement offering a power reserve of 48 hours. It sits well on small wrists as well, despite the 53mm size, because the lugs actually sit below the end of the watch in a very smartly designed system that can best be described as 'negative lug space'. The ‘TA’ in the name stands for ‘Turbine Automatic’, as the movement’s automatic winding is optimally regulated by dual air turbines, which are bead-blasted, satin-finished, and treated with black PVD for a refined aesthetic. The winding mode can be selected by a small lever. In the ‘full’ position, only the slightest movement is required to wind up the mainspring. At ‘red’, which stands for ‘reduced’, the winding is moderated, thus minimising the tension on the mainspring. On ‘stop’ mode, the winding system is disabled and the UR 105-TA can then be wound manually using the crown. The ingenuity of this mechanism lies in the invisible carousel responsible for the functioning of the satellite hours. The carousel operates precisely, silently, subtly, and in perfect sync with the rest of the timepiece.

UR-Satellite UR-105M ‘Iron Knight’
Set in a titanium body reinforced with a steel ‘armour’, the UR-105M uses a system of four hour discs, mounted on a Geneva cross to tell time on a fixed-hour scale at the bottom of the case. It uses an original hand-wound movement patented by Urwerk. The appropriate hour disc glides past the scale, pointing to the current minute and a hole in the decorative canopy (made from an extremely lightweight material called PEEK—polyether ether ketone) reveals the current hour, which is emphasised, as the other hours are partially covered. The running seconds and power reserve are displayed laterally on the case band, while the back of the timepiece sports the brand’s signature ‘control board’ with additional displays and functions. The back also includes an ‘oil change’ indicator signalling when it is time for servicing, a 42-hour power reserve indicator, and a fine-tuning screw allowing adjustment of the rate. A limited edition of 77 pieces, the timepiece is worn on a black alligator leather strap.

UR-Satellite UR-210 Red Gold—the flagship model
Visually arresting in every way, this Urwerk marvel comes in a case measuring 43.8mm by 53.6mm, crafted mostly out of 18-karat red gold, while matte-finished, black-coloured titanium is used for the caseback, as well as the crown assembly. The satin-finished case holds the self-winding calibre UR-7.10, which beats at a frequency of 28,800vph and guarantees a power reserve of 39 hours. The ‘satellite’ mechanism of this timepiece primarily comprises a high-tech, oversized, three-dimensional retrograde minute hand, which encloses the hour satellite and indicates the time as it traverses a minute scale from zero to 60. Interestingly, the retrograde hand is inspired by the beak of a falcon. With this smooth one-hour journey through time, tracing an arc of 120 degrees, the mechanism is at its marvellous best at the end of the 59th minute. A sharp, distinct click signals the return of the minute hand to its starting point, and in less than 1/10th of a second, the hand flies back to dock with the next hour satellite. This lightning-fast retrograde system is based on three key elements—a central axis offering excellent stability for the satellite/retrograde complication, a minute hand that not only forms a frame for the hour satellites, but also displays the time in an exceptional manner, and a double coaxial star-shaped cam that regulates the retrograde mechanism through its gearing, with its rotation defining the trajectory of the minute hand.
