Collectors worldwide are rejoicing the return of an icon The legendary Oris Carl Brashear returns in a limited edition chronograph version. Oris Carl Brashear Chronograph Collectors worldwide are rejoicing the rebirth of an iconic watch With their new Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition watch, Oris pays another fitting tribute to the U.S Navy's first African-American Master Diver - the extraordinary Carl Brashear. Undoubtedly one of the hardest guys to ever sport a Mark V diving suit, Carl Brashear was a pioneer in every sense of the word. This new bronze diver's watch is limited to 2000 pieces and symbolises the rebirth of an iconic watch. The watch has a stunning blue dial, gold-plated hands and hour markers, a bronze case that ages beautifully and a stainless steel case back. However, the most remarkable thing about this watch is not the appearance, but the backstory of Carl Brashear (which you will read in this edition). Oris has chosen to commemorate Brashear (in case the name doesn't sound familiar, you might remember the silver screen adaptation of his story, "Men of Honour," in which Cuba Gooding Jr. plays Carl Brashear), by creating a watch using bronze – a metal associated with vintage diving helmets. Made in a limited run of 2000 pieces, the watch houses an automatic chronograph movement - the Oris Caliber 771. It comes with a handsome dark brown leather strap and a bronze buckle – an unconventional choice for a unique dive watch. MRP - ₹330,000 The limited edition is now at Ethos Watch Boutiques. Carl Brashear - The backstory Brashear joined the Navy in 1948 as a 17-year-old, and graduated from the Navy’s diving programme in 1954. During his 31-year career in the Navy, Brashear was the first African-American to graduate the Navy's diving program. While recovering a lost atom bomb in 1966, an accident claimed his left leg below the knee, an injury that appeared to spell the end of his diving career. But the Navy veteran did not give up and he embarked on a long and exhausting period of rehabilitation. He became the U.S. Navy’s first amputee diver in 1968, and then qualified as a Master Diver in 1970, the first African American to do so. The highly-acclaimed movie 'Men of Honour' starring Robert De Niro and Cuba Gooding Jr. is inspired by the extraordinary story of Carl Brashear. MRP - ₹330,000 For more information, please call [+91 8725028892](tel:+91 8725028893) or [+91 8725028891](tel:+91 8725028888). A unique bronze chronograph watch celebrating a hero This new watch bears obvious similarity to the last version, but with a very significant difference—it’s a chronograph. The chronograph function is symbolic of the number of times Carl Brashear was stopped by factors in his life he couldn’t control, and yet always got back up again. The use of bronze in both editions was inspired by the diving equipment that was Brashear’s companion in his early years as a diver. The first edition Carl Barashear watch itself was a fully bronze version of Oris’ wildly popular Divers Sixty-Five and it was something of a sensation, selling out all 2000 pieces soon after it was announced. Well, in 2018, Oris released its followup tribute piece: the Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition. This is the first time the Divers Sixty-Five family has seen a chronograph, and it’s a handsome piece. MRP - ₹330,000 For more information, please call [+91 8725028892](tel:+91 8725028893) or [+91 8725028891](tel:+91 8725028888). Over time, this bronze watch will age to become as individual as its inspiration: Carl Brashear Bronze watches have become increasingly popular over the past few years, and here's the reason. Bronze is traditionally valued for marine applications because the copper in bronze readily forms a patina that protects the underlying metal from corrosion. A patina will naturally form on the case of a bronze watch, with each patina having a unique appearance. Such patinas can, however, stain or discolour the skin if in direct contact with the body, which is why this 43mm bronze watch has a stainless steel case back. In this watch, the dive bezel, with its engraved hashes and numerals in relief, lends a visually interesting backdrop, where the bronze appears almost aged right out of the box. The 43mm case with a uni-directional rotating bezel is solid cast bronze and so are the crown and chronograph push-pieces. MRP - ₹330,000 For more information, please call [+91 8725028892](tel:+91 8725028893) or [+91 8725028891](tel:+91 8725028888). Stunning ink blue dial with ‘bubble-curved’ sapphire crystal The inky dark blue dial comes with applied rose gold plated hands and hour markers, filled with Super-LumiNova. The ink blue, a handsome complement to the bronze case, is a reminder of the deep water into which Brashear ventured so often and so bravely. The ‘bubble-curved’ sapphire crystal lends the dial a curved appearance while providing subtle magnification. The dial’s balanced, symmetrical layout is known as ‘bi-compax’ and gives the watch its classic chronograph look. Markers and hands are rendered in an ecru hue for a hint of faux-tina without being heavy-handed, and plays off well against the lovely matte blue of the dial. Combined with the dot-hash-triangle hour markings and minimal text, the dial is an incredibly clean display. Reliable time keeping with the Oris Caliber 771 automatic movement Driving the Carl Brashear Chronograph is a self-winding Caliber 771 movement. With 48 hours of power reserve, 27 jewels, and a 4Hz heartbeat, the watch offers reliable timekeeping, and is water resistant upto 100 m. MRP - ₹330,000 The limited edition is now at Ethos Watch Boutiques. For more information, please call [+91 8725028892](tel:+91 8725028893) or [+91 8725028891](tel:+91 8725028888). Caseback inscribed with Brashear's famous motto. But why a stainless steel caseback when the case is in bronze? Though we've covered this above, it's interesting to recap that a patina will naturally form on the case of a bronze watch. Such patinas can stain or discolour the skin if in direct contact with the body, and this is why the 43mm bronze watch has a stainless steel case back. The stainless steel case back comes with Carl Brashear's diver helmet and his motto "It's not a sin to get knocked down, it's a sin to stay down" inscribed on it. The Carl Brashear Chronograph comes on a dark brown leather strap with a bronze buckle. MRP - ₹330,000 For more information, please call [+91 8725028892](tel:+91 8725028893) or [+91 8725028891](tel:+91 8725028888). A piece of legacy for all watch collectors The Oris Carl Brashear Limited Edition is presented in a special luxurious wooden box with an additional stainless steel pin buckle. Brashear’s struggle continues to inspire many, and the Carl Brashear Foundation – run by his son, Phillip Brashear – works towards that. A token of the Foundation comes with the Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition in the form of a commemorative medallion. MRP - ₹330,000 For more information, please call [+91 8725028892](tel:+91 8725028893) or [+91 8725028891](tel:+91 8725028888).
