Carl Brashear - The backstory Brashear joined the Navy in 1948 as a 17-year-old, and graduated from the Navy’s diving programme in 1954. During his 31-year career in the Navy, Brashear was the first African-American to graduate the Navy's diving program. While recovering a lost atom bomb in 1966, an accident claimed his left leg below the knee, an injury that appeared to spell the end of his diving career. But the Navy veteran did not give up and he embarked on a long and exhausting period of rehabilitation. He became the U.S. Navy’s first amputee diver in 1968, and then qualified as a Master Diver in 1970, the first African American to do so. The chronograph function is symbolic of the number of times Carl Brashear was stopped by factors in his life he couldn’t control, and yet always got back up again.
