Bell & Ross introduces the all new BR X5 Green Lum, a watch that glows in the dark The new Bell & Ross BR X5 Green Lum, a watch that glows in the dark The BR X5 Green Lum is the eighth and newest watch among the ‘Lum’ series, and it glows like no other with a luminescent case Bell & Ross is among the few watchmakers who have faithfully offered luxury sports watches with integrated and sleek designs through their Urban collection. A range that was first introduced in 2019 has now come a long way, becoming more contemporary and adventurous. A more powerful reflection of this family of watches is visible in the BR-X5 collection, which follows these design codes unquestionably and bears witness to the brand’s distinguished square silhouette. The all-new BR-X5 Green Lum is also faithful to the brand's design principles, the watch features an LM3D photo-luminescent composite case, which means the case glows in the dark. A glowing legacy The trailblazer in aeronautically inspired watches has been illuminating the world of horology with its Lum series timepieces. According to the brand, ‘visibility has always been a key objective for each Bell & Ross design, taking inspiration from aeronautical instrumentation’. Within the Lum line, we’ve seen timepieces with fully luminescent dials and straps, such as the BR 03-92 Full Lum and the BR 03-92 Grey Lum. Each model has pushed the boundaries of luminescent technology, culminating in the BR-X5 Green Lum that we’re focusing on today. The watch stands apart from the rest thanks to its innovative composite material, LM3D, which lights up not only the components of the dial but the entire 41mm case. According to the brand, the biggest challenge for this watch was ‘bringing together innovation with photo-luminescent material and high-end design in the BR-X5 line’. The case of the watch uses both LM3D and grade-2 micro-blasted, black DLC-treated titanium parts in multiple layers. The top and bottom sections are crafted from green luminescent fiberglass composite, giving the watch a unique glow. The bezel is fixed, made from Grade 2 titanium with a microblasted finish and featuring a luminescent composite insert. The back of the case is made from Grade 2 microblasted titanium and features a smoked grey sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating, offering a view of the inner workings of the watch through the case-back. The architecture of the BR-X5's multi-component case alternates between multiple layers of LM3D, a photoluminescent composite material made from quartz fibres and grade 2 microblasted black titanium with a DLC finish. The container that houses the mechanism is inserted between two shields of LM3D. The watch is an extension of the brand’s Urban range, most notably known for their signature aeronautical heritage and the ‘round within square’ design. The watch is powered by the BR-CAL.323 calibre that beats at 28,800vph (4Hz) and boasts a power reserve of approximately 70 hours (hence the 3-day power reserve indicator). The date window is conveniently positioned at 3 o'clock and the power reserve indicator is placed at 9 o'clock. This COSC-certified calibre has a variable‐inertia balance wheel and transversal bridge. The movement sits in between a titanium shell and two layers of LM3D. The attention to detail is clear to see, and a watch as daring as this demanded nothing less. Meanwhile, the black DLC-treated screw-down crown helps makes the watch water-resistant up to 100m. The watch stands apart from the rest thanks to its innovative composite material, LM3D, which lights up not only the components of the dial but the entire 41mm case. This inspiring timepiece, limited to 500 pieces, is bound to be spoken of for years to come every time a mention of luminous watches is made. The Lum line continues to surprise with its innovative designs and use of materials. It’s practical, it stays true to the standards that the Parisian brand have set for themselves, and it’s undeniably fun.
