Have a great day! SOCIAL MEDIA Facebook is shutting down its facial recognition feature Source: Giphy A few days after the rebrand, Facebook announced its plans to shut down its facial recognition software. In a blog post published on Tuesday, the company said it will shut down the software and more than a billion facial recognition templates that were used to pair faces with photos. Rewind: The feature automatically recognizes the faces on photos and videos and suggests that the users tag them. It was introduced in 2010 and automatically enabled at launch. Facebook made the feature explicitly opt-in only in 2019, which probably explains how it managed to compile more than a billion face recognition profiles. Prior to the feature, all tagging was manual. The big picture: Jerome Pesenti, VP of Artificial Intelligence at Facebook, said that the main reason behind the discontinuation is the lack of clear regulation by the government and “concerns about the place of facial recognition technology in society.” What’s interesting is that Facebook had to pay $650 million earlier this year for using facial recognition to identify Illinois residents’ photos without their consent due to the BIPA (Biometric Information Privacy Act), which aims to protect user data. “Looking ahead, we still see facial recognition technology as a powerful tool, for example, for people needing to verify their identity or to prevent fraud and impersonation. But the many specific instances where facial recognition can be helpful need to be weighed against growing concerns about the use of this technology as a whole,” Pesenti said. The move probably comes from Meta’s attempt to position itself as a trustworthy ally in the fight for data privacy. But it might also be an attempt to clear its name after a series of controversies that resulted in a rebrand. One thing is certain, though: it’s definitely a win for users. EMAIL AND SMS MARKETING Klaviyo launches new features ahead of the holiday season Source: Giphy Klaviyo, the leading email and SMS marketing software for eCommerce brands, announced several new features to help brands create more effective campaigns during the holiday season. Why is this important? These innovations will aim to engage customers and build stronger relationships across several marketing channels. In addition, brands will get inspiration from industry leaders on their top-performing email and SMS content. "Everyone in the ecommerce world is gearing up for the holiday rush — and between supply chain issues, the continued uncertainty of the pandemic and recent consumer data privacy changes, it's becoming increasingly difficult for brands to find the right customers. That means the more you can build strong relationships with your existing customers, and maximize your customer lifetime value instead of needing to acquire new customers over and over again, the more successful you'll be. We believe that the features announced today will give brands the power to build creative, effective campaigns that will help them build stronger customer relationships far beyond the holidays," said Andrew Bialecki, Klaviyo co-founder and CEO. The new features are focused on SMS enhancements that “complement Klaviyo's email marketing solutions, which are also getting a creative boost with new editor improvements and a curated library of top-performing email and SMS campaigns leveraging data from thousands of Klaviyo's customers.’’ The new features include: “Showcase”: A gallery of thousands of high-performing email and SMS template designs and copies that will provide users with the inspiration needed to fuel their own holiday campaigns. Users will be able to filter the content by use case, industry, holiday, and results. Template Editor improvements: This feature will make email design a more intuitive experience requiring minimal effort. Users will have the option to choose from dozens of beautifully designed email templates, which they can customize according to their brand guidelines. Forms Library improvements: This is an extensive library of form templates that are both optimized for desktop and mobile and designed based on best practices. “Scheduled Reports”: This feature allows setting up reports to automatically run and send them on a defined schedule. As per usual, things are heating up and marketers and brands are getting a ton of useful updates and features right before the holiday season. Fingers crossed this helps them to have an awesome Q4! DIGITAL MARKETING Alphabet reports record profit due to Google ad surge Source: Giphy Alphabet, an American multinational technology conglomerate and Google owner, reported soaring third-quarter ad sales for the second quarter in a row. Its Q3 2021 saw record revenue of $65.1 billion and record profits for the fifth quarter in a row at $18.9 billion. Through its search engine, YouTube video service, and partnerships across the Web, Google sells more internet ads than any other company. Demand for those services went up last year when the pandemic forced people to spend more time online. The situation remains the same this year. "The consumer shift to digital is real and will continue even as we start seeing people return to stores. The underlying takeaway is that people want more choice, they want more information, more flexibility, and we don't see this reversing," said Philipp Schindler, Google's Chief Business Officer. YouTube advertising revenue went up from $7 billion last quarter to a record $7.2 billion this quarter. Google Cloud lost $644 million in addition to the $591 million it lost last quarter. Still, cloud revenues grew by an entire $1.5 billion year over year to $4.99 billion from $3.44 billion in 2020. But the way Google reports earnings makes it impossible to tell whether its hardware products like the Pixel phone, Nest, Chromecast, and Android are doing well. The bad news: The Verge reports that “Google is facing down a bevy of antitrust lawsuits arguing that at least some of its profits are ill-gotten gains.’’ Allegedly, Google boosted its ad-buying system over competitors , tracked users in incognito mode , collected location data even after users turned off location sharing , throttled web page load speed to promote its AMP competitor, and more.
