We Have a New Favorite Movie of the Year

Are audiences tired of all the capes and wham-bam-punch stuff? Or, are critics just tired of writing about them? Despite some prominent flops, it’s looking like we’ll finish the year with three superhero flicks in the box-office top 10. That’s a lot of revenue for a failing genre. Possessing no special powers myself, I don’t know what the future holds. But I do know this: It’s certainly fun to think about superheroes being supplanted by—well, anything else! As I’ve noticed certain patterns and repetitions playing out on the big screen: It’s been a year of French courtroom dramas (of which there have been two very good ones), auteur-driven biopics, and soon, a year of hit men.
