There will probably never be another author like Stephen King. I’m not sure there ever could be

There will probably never be another author like Stephen King. I’m not sure there ever could be. Since the publication of his first novel Carrie, just shy of fifty years ago, King has held dominion over the landscape of horror. Of course, in so long and varied a career, there are exhilarating highs, a few bewildering lows, and many unexpected diversions. The following list is an attempt to rank King’s published work in all its darkness, weatherworn beauty, and surprising weirdness. The man has written over seventy books, so some nod to brevity is required. Any published stories compiled within a larger collection will not be ranked singularly. That still leaves over sixty novels and more than a dozen collections of tales. Together, they form a dark constellation of stories that generations have traced, in wonder and fear and hope.   [View in Browser]( [Esquire]( [SHOP]( EXCLUSIVE [SUBSCRIBE]( [All 75 Stephen King Books, Ranked]( [All 75 Stephen King Books, Ranked]( There will probably never be another author like Stephen King. On Tuesday, just two days before her sudden death at 96, she bestowed a personal honor on a senior member of her staff who was leaving. Surprising the courtier with a medal for distinguished service, it was an entirely private affair but meant so much to him. Even at great personal cost to the monarch, who suffered with mobility issues this past year, her devotion to her staff was uppermost in her mind. Duty, after all, had been her strength all these years, alongside her husband of 73 years, Prince Philip. The typical first line of defense is the sewer system, which cities can build out to accommodate more water at considerable to extortionate expense. Tokyo, for example, has added to its subterranean drainage with a system of dams, levees, and tunnels. “That's really expensive, really hard to maintain, really prone to failure,” says Thaddeus Pawlowski, an urban designer at Columbia’s Center for Resilient Cities and Landscapes. But “Tokyo is super densely built, there's no way they can hold all their water with green roofs and bioswales.” [Read More](   [OPR Lift Every Voice]( Follow Us [Unsubscribe]( | [Privacy Notice/Notice at Collection]( esquire.com ©2022 Hearst Magazine Media, Inc.
