It can tell us a lot about the state of the modern conservative movement and political Christianity.

[Donald Trump's Insane, Yet Clarifying Rant About How Joe Biden Will âHurt Godâ](
Just as Vice President Mike Pence provided a clarifying look this week at how conservatives see the Supreme Court, his boss has been a clarifying force when it comes to American political religion. In short, the kind of Political Christianity that now dominates on the American right has very little to do with the teachings of Jesus Christ, or even the Old Testament. That's how Donald J. Trump became the standard-bearer for Evangelicals despite personifying all of the Seven Deadly Sins at once. On Thursday, the last day that he and Congress saw fit to work this week, Trump gave a speech in Ohio in which he once again demonstrated that his strategy for courting Evangelical votes is just throwing things at the wall. Politics Editor Jack Holmes explains why this is a fairly revelatory look at the state of the conservative movement.[Read More](

[George R.R. Martin's Controversy At the Hugo Awards Highlights a Power Struggle in Sci-Fi/Fantasy](
It's not super surprising that Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin wasn't a paragon of sensitivity as host of the digital 2020 Hugo Awards last Friday. The awards, which honor achievements in science fiction and fantasy, have in recent years begun to recognize the contributions that women, the LGBT community, and people of color are making to speculative fiction. And, in contrast to the diverse slate of nominees and winners, Martin has been criticized for focusing his remarks on white men, mispronouncing the names of nominees, and making transphobic jokes during the awards. This thoughtless approach towards issues of race and class, from an author who can be so very thoughtful on other subjects, is unfortunately pretty much in keeping with the Song of Ice and Fire books. And as Gabrielle Bruney explains, this controversy is a perfect example of the progress the sci-fi/fantasy genre still has to make, and the lessons that its iconsâlike Martinâstill need to learn and accept.[Read More](

[You Guys All Know This Is Bullshit, Right? OK, Good.](
On Thursday, Donald Trump went on Geraldo Riveraâs radio show and announced that a coronavirus vaccine would be available more quickly than health experts are expecting. âSooner than the end of the year,â he said. âCould be much sooner.â âSooner than November 3?â asked Rivera, citing a date that up until recently was certain to be Election Day in the United States of America. Trump answered âI think in some cases, yes possibly before, but right around that time.â This is big. Itâs information the American people have been waiting for. Surely Trump got this information from an esteemed source? Wrong, says Dave Holmes.[Read More](
