Of course, as is the case on everything happening in the House these days, Republican dysfunction has played a huge part in the wrangling over this bill. Trumpism is at the root of said dysfunction, too. There are legitimate reasons to reform FISA, which, ironically, was designed originally to rein in the intelligence community’s worst instincts after the revelations from the Pike and Church committees. It has expanded far beyond its original mandate. It had a conspicuous growth spurt after 9/11. This expansion is worthy of examination and, where necessary, pruning. But not by this passel of meatheads, and certainly not in the service of the criminal vandal who wants to be president again.
