[Click here]( [The Erin Hanson Newsletter]( How to Commission an Original Oil Painting Dear {NAME}, There are many reasons why you might want to approach an artist to ask for a commissioned painting. You might have a specific wall in your home that needs an odd-sized painting. You may be trying to find the perfect color palette in an interior design scheme. You may want to commemorate a special moment, perhaps as a gift for a loved one. When I create a commission, I love to work from photographs that my collectors themselves have taken. I feel like this gives the painting a personal touch. They do not need to be fancy, professional photographs - I can make magic out of ordinary phone snapshots. Sometimes I have visited the location myself, and I can work from my own photos, like in this commission I did of Sedona, Arizona, to commemorate a couple's honeymoon there: When you start thinking about your commission, you should have an idea of what sort of frame you want for your piece. The type of frame you want will determine what type of canvas I will paint on. For example, if you want a traditional frame that overlaps the edges of the painting, I would use a 3/4" stretched canvas. If you want to use a floater frame, I would paint on 1-1/2" canvas. If you wanted to hang the painting un-framed on the wall, with the edges of the canvas painted, I would use 2"-deep canvas. The next thing to consider is size. Where is the painting going to hang? I recommend taking some blue painter's tape and marking out different sizes on the wall. You can visualize the size better this way and view the wall from different angles around the house. Remember to include the size of the frame when you are marking out your dimensions (a floater frame is about 1 to 2" wide, and a standard frame is 2 to 4" wide.) Color might be the next thing to consider. If you have any favorite colors, please let me know. (If you want to avoid any colors, please let me know too!) It is helpful for me to have a photograph of the room before I begin painting, so I can be sure my work of art will look great in the space. I will often create a small "painting sketch" of the commission before I begin painting, to make sure we are all on the same page and I understand what is desired in the finished piece. You would get to approve the sketch before I begin to paint. When the painting is completed, I will take a photograph of it and send it to you. I guarantee my commissioned work -- if for any reason you are not 100% in love with the painting, I will start fresh and create a new painting for you. I want to be sure you will treasure your painting for a lifetime.
