Over Memorial Day alone, the Gun Violence Archive recorded at least 14 mass shootings, killing more than 14 people and injuring 60. As a father of three young children, I honestly cannot fathom the horror that these families are experiencing. The anger and frustration I feel watching that these shootings have taken place at elementary schools, grocery stores, and hospitals is beyond comprehension. These are places where every American deserves to feel safe. And the truth is, I'm sick and tired of feckless and futile thoughts and prayers after the senseless violence that our communities are experiencing in these attacks. The inaction and obstruction of gun reform by Republican lawmakers is unconscionable. We need action on common-sense gun reform, and we need it NOW. Unfortunately, it's clear that nothing will make Republicans take action on this critical issue. In fact, my extreme opponent here and many Republican candidates for Congress across the country have been campaigning with ads displaying how brazenly and ignorantly proud they are to be holding automatic assault weapons like the ones being used to kill innocent children. As someone running for Congress myself, I can't even imagine so brazenly supporting automatic assault weapons at a time when children and families are dying from these specific guns. My children do active shooter drills at school and, like other parents whose kids asked about this horrible school shooting, I needed to explain to my kids not to worry and that they will be safe at school.
