I hope you and your family are enjoying the long weekend. I took some time to enjoy the beautiful weather with my kids, and I also spent time reflecting. For me, Presidents' Day is always a time for me to think back on my experience serving President Obama – and to reflect on the power of affecting change. In 2007, I took a leap of faith and became one of the first 30 people to join Obama's campaign in Chicago. At the time, I remember the passion and hope I felt hearing President Obama's vision for the future of our country. After his win, I spent six years as an Advisor in the Pentagon, serving three Secretaries of Defense. We were all led by the same message Obama had won the election on – make our country, and our world, a safer and more inclusive place. Since President Obama, we've had some dark Presidents' Days, reflecting on the failures of leadership under Donald Trump, and the tarnishing effect those years had on our democracy and our standing around the world. My goal now is to continue the progress, hope, and Democratic vision for our country. We must always look toward and work toward a bright future. But that goal really depends on you, friend, and on the outcome of the 2022 elections. As I saw in the Obama Administration, every president needs the support of Congress to pass legislation that helps make our country stronger and better — from combating climate change to investing in schools to making health care and prescription drug prices more affordable. I'm excited to be part of that Democratic movement and to support a Democratic administration as a Representative in Washington. [If this is a vision you can get behind, join us.
