In fact, her life was so horrifying that entire genres of horror movies, books, and subcultures stem from it. But let me take you through her childhood first. You see, royal families in Europe have a long history of inbreeding. (The term “blue blood” comes from the fact that the aristocracy of a given nation would never marry outside of their family. If they did, it would taint the blue bloodline forever.) Whether Elizabeth was born from incest, we will never know. But at a young age she “suffered from seizures, loss of control, and fits of rage.” Worse yet, as a child, she witnessed the brutal punishments handed out by her family’s officers to servants. To make matters worse, one of her uncles taught her Satanism, and she learned about sadomasochism from her aunt. Now, you may have heard of Elizabeth before, or maybe not. But you definitely have heard of the modern-day subculture of characters, books, and movies she is credited with inventing: Dracula and vampires. You see, even though Dracula and vampires are mythological creatures, Countess Báthory and her horrific deeds were not. She is credited with being the world’s first female serial killer. According to the Guinness Book of Records, she was the most murderous woman in history. She is reported to have tortured and murdered young women for years with impunity. This is where her story takes a ghoulish turn. It’s been argued that she lusted for the blood and flesh of virgins, which Báthory reputedly believed would preserve her youth eternally, earning her the epithet “Bloody Countess.” She was notorious for soaking and bathing in tubs full of warm blood from freshly mutilated girls and is estimated to have killed or mutilated over 600 women. Fast-forward to the first half of the 19th century in New Orleans. In the Big Easy was another notorious female serial killer named Marie Delphine Macarty. She was a socialite of high status in the French Quarter. But she, too, had a dark and horrifying fetish: She maintained a torture chamber where she mutilated and murdered her slaves.
