Hi there,  Be honest with me… You’re struggling to focus on your work even though you know that you’re working in a very time-pressed schedule, right? If that’s true, then I have bad and good news for you… The good news is that you’re not the only one that experiences this… The bad news is that dealing with it is hard, but necessary if you want to have more free time… And the biggest reason why you may be struggling with focus is no other than the problems of the 21st century. Distractions and multitasking! If you want to be focused and more importantly, stay focused, you MUST learn how to deal with distractions and multitasking, otherwise, you’ll always feel like you’re tired every day and that there’s not enough time in a day Nowadays our schedules are full of demands that we can’t help but multitask and work on multiple things. On the other hand, we can’t disconnect completely from our phones to prevent ourselves from getting distracted because we live in the information age, and our phones are necessary for work. To help you deal with distractions and multitasking, I want to introduce to you a method that really works for me and my team.
It’s called the Reel It In Method. Let me explain… The Reel It In Method is about strengthening your focus muscle. Here’s what you should do… Step #1: Clear Your Mind Whenever you receive a notification or something that’s related to work, your default reflex is to immediately jump to it. Either it is to read an email, check a notification, etc. And that breaks your focus on what you were working on, and if the notification is work-related, you may start multitasking. So, the next time you receive a notification and you’re about to check it, do this simple exercise: - Close your eyes
- Take a deep breath, hold it for 5 seconds
- Then exhale - And as you exhale, imagine your mind releasing all the things it’s holding onto
- If you haven’t cleared your mind, do it a few more times. Each time you exhale, feel your mind releasing The next step you need to take is… Step #2 Gain Instant Presence After you do the exercise in Step #2, next, bring yourself back to the present moment. Now you need to refocus on what you were focused on before receiving the notification. To do that, ask yourself these questions: - Remind yourself: What are you doing now? Why are you doing it?
- What do you need to achieve so that your time isn't wasted?
- What’s the most important thing I could be doing right now?
- Is this distraction urgent? Do I need to divert attention right now?
- Do I need to care about it? Why?
- Will I regret spending time on this later? Once you answer the questions above, the next thing you need to do is… Step #3: Make A Decision To put away a distraction for good, you have to process it. That means you have to make a decision about it so that your mind can be at peace about it. And the best way to do that is to write down whatever needs to be done The idea is that once you write the notification or work demand you received down into a task, you tell your mind to forget about it. Set yourself sometime each day: - To process your accumulated random todos
- Like 30 minutes after lunch, and 1 hour before getting ready for bed
- The idea is to clear your list as you go through the day so that you don’t feel overwhelmed Once you schedule a time to focus on your to-do’s, you don’t ignore it, instead, you commit to it, but just not right now. That’s the Reel It In Method! I hope that this method is going to help you deal with distractions and multitasking.
