[Empire Financial Daily] Buffett: 'Banks Will Fail'... And Feedback on Failed Brands and MedTech By Herb Greenberg --------------------------------------------------------------- [The EV Story No One's Telling]( Forget batteries, energy storage, charging stations, chips and everything else you've heard about electric vehicles... Because the biggest EV story everyone's missing is THIS. It's a brand new asset that the International Monetary Fund claims should rise 24,900%. [Just click here now to find out how to stake YOUR claim in this secret asset today](. --------------------------------------------------------------- 'Banks will fail'... That's what Warren Buffett said in a CNBC interview yesterday. But what was he really saying? This was the topic of a brief interview I did yesterday with my old colleague and pal, Brian Sullivan, on CNBC, where I'm a frequent contributor. (You can watch the full interview [right here]( The short version: In my view, Buffett was saying that as a course of business, there are banks that will fail, because there are always bank failures... they just don't make headlines like the recent failures of Silicon Valley Bank and Silvergate Bank. Buffett also made it clear that for some banks, commercial real estate loans might become more than a small headache. Moving on... Before writing [my recent Empire Financial Daily essay]( on Tupperware Brands' (TUP) latest woes, I asked my nearly 375,000 Twitter followers which brands ultimately broke... Source: Twitter/@herbgreenberg It generated a good thread of around 100 responses – you can read it in full [right here](. I then flipped the question and asked which brands looked like they would break, but survived... Source: Twitter/@herbgreenberg [Here's the full thread](. Interestingly, one brand seemed to pop up more than others: footwear company Crocs (CROX). Experts call it "the next holy grail for EVs" and predict that it will "go global" and "take over as the standard EV battery." [Here's how to play it](...
--------------------------------------------------------------- Finally, the [April 5 Empire Financial Daily]( on how artificial heart valves are made – and how I got to meet the team that made mine – sparked more than a few comments from readers... They include: "Herb – Just wanted to say that you're getting to meet the 3 actual people who made your valve is pretty damn great! When you indicated, early in the article that you were going to meet the people who made your valve, I thought it was just to see, or say hello and thanks, to the assembly line... the photo made it clear, you really met the 3 people who make your every heartbeat possible, wow!" – Marshal Herb comment: Marshal, it was the highlight and culmination of the entire ordeal of getting the valve. "I was very impressed with your story about aortic valve replacement, but from your personal experience and from sharing insight into the complex, labor intensive hand-made nature of biological bioprostheses. "I can relate, both because I worked for Medtronic for nearly 20 years, and did a lot of work for their heart valves businesses as a literature and patent searcher. "But having had mitral valve repair during open heart surgery in June 2021, I can relate medically. I had a mild heart attack; during the angioplasty, they confirmed that my mitral valve regurgitation was more extensive than previously suspected. So I had a double coronary bypass and open heart surgery to repair my flailing mitral valve leaflet. Medical technology, particularly the implantables, are both amazing and lifesaving. MedTech has gotten lots of bad publicity over under reporting adverse events, overcharging, etc. But when you're being alive relies upon MedTech, you do get a new level of insight. "Thanks again for sharing!" – Roy Z. Herb comment: You have a unique perspective, Roy. I agree with you on MedTech, which has generated a good number of shorts for the reasons you cite. But when it works, it works. The reality is that adverse events come with the territory. You just don't want there to be too many. "What an interesting report on Edwards. I also have an Edwards aortic heart valve which I received in June of 2020. In my case, it is a model 11500A, 23mmI originally had my aortic valve replaced in 2008 with an experimental valve made by a company in St. Paul, MN that was supposed to last 50 years. It lasted 12 years before needing to be replaced!! "Not many of us get to go through open heart aortic valve surgery twice. Aren't we blessed to have trained and talented surgeons available, and to have companies like Edwards to produce the products. I can also understand the emotions you felt when meeting the team that made your valve. Sounds like a fabulous experience." – Tom J. Herb comment: Tom, you got yours just a few months after I got mine... which is also a 23mm valve, from the Perimount family of valves, and sized for a transcatheter aortic valve replacement ("TAVR") if I outlive the valve! ⺠"My mother had open heart surgery for a triple bypass and a new valve back in 2004 when she was 82 years of age. She had a biological valve (from piglet I believe). What is the difference to that you described in your article 'The making of an artificial heart valve' and the biological my mum had? "God bless all doctors. The vast majority of them do sterling work and I for one am very grateful for the medical attention I receive. I live in the U.K. "I will take this opportunity to say that I read your articles regularly and find them most informative and well written. My compliments to you and my thank you." – Marina K. Herb comment: If your mom had a pig's valve, she may have really had the actual valve from a pig, which was part of the evolution of artificial heart valves... as opposed to mine, whose leaflets are processed from a cow's heart – but not the actual valve. "That was a great piece today about your heart valve. One could say "heartwarming". If you have not heard of the work of Elizabeth Blackburn from UCSF (who was ae heading the Salk Institute til a few years ago) that may be of interest in your dive into longevity. "Another resource is a book by my friend and colleague Dr Kenneth Pelletier on Epigenetics Change Your Genes, Change Your Life." – Heather T. (MD) Herb comment: Much appreciated, Heather! "I loved your story on your Edwards heart valve. I am based in Perth, Western Australia and we have invested in an ASX listed company called Echo IQ (ticker EIQ). Echo IQ has an AI that can diagnose, often missed, aortic stenosis with 100pc efficiency. Hopefully it's going to save many lives. I would love to hear your feedback." – Paul S. Herb comment: Paul, I don't know the company, which appears to be early stage. I will say that a holy grail for the use of artificial intelligence in valve disease is trying to predict who will need their valves replaced... and when. I see that Edwards Lifesciences (EW) is funding its first trial. Keep in mind that it's a trial, and Edwards partners with, funds, and invests in many companies. "Herb; thank you for your compelling story, it was a great read. I believe that your experience is quite unique because the procedure is very serious. I lost my dad years ago due to a mitral valve replacement procedure. The operation was successful but a blood clot was the problem. I am so happy for you, your story explains so much about the progress of this technology, many lives will be saved. Thanks again Herb, I always enjoy your writing." – Wes E. "Wow! Amazing! Thanks for sharing this. Maybe you could look into reducing your taxes since you're now part-cow, and they are exempt from taxes." – Mike S. Herb comment: Moo! "So thrilled you got this done with such a splendid outcome. Mazel tov! And keep on chugging along so you can dance at a grandchild's wedding!" – John S. Herb comment: Thanks, John... And that's the plan! Regards, Herb Greenberg
