Here's why. As a reminder, Democrats currently have a 51-49 majority in the Senate. But Democrats also currently hold 23 of the 34 Senate seats up for grabs this cycle. That means we're playing defense nationwide. But when Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) announced his retirement, essentially giving his seat to the Republicans, the stakes got a lot higher. Now, we have to pick up a seat just to maintain our existing majority. But here's the good news: experts agree that Florida is our best shot to gain a Senate seat in 2024, and we've endorsed the best woman for the job: Debbie Mucarsel-Powell. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell is the perfect challenger in the race for Sen. Rick Scott's Florida seat for a few reasons: - Sen. Scott has never won an election by more than 1.2% of the vote. As a first-term incumbent, this makes him vulnerable. And in contrast, Debbie won her Republican-leaning Congressional district by 1.8% in 2018. - Scott has never run in a presidential election year. And in Florida, Republicans typically perform worse in presidential election years than they do during midterm elections. - More than 60% of Floridians want to enshrine abortion access in their state constitution. In spite of this, Scott has said he would proudly vote to pass a national abortion ban. Debbie is the pro-choice champion Floridians need to uphold their values in the Senate. As a former member of Congress, Debbie has a history of public service and advocacy on behalf of Floridians — and she's ready to bring her passion and experience to the Senate. Control of the Senate could easily come down to Florida this November, and Debbie will need the full support of this community to flip this vulnerable seat.
