I spent my career protecting our homeland. After 9/11, I was recruited into the CIA and served three tours in Iraq alongside the U.S. military. I went on to serve under presidents of both parties in the White House, and then at the Pentagon. But what motivated me to first run for elected office was my mom. She was diagnosed with stage IV ovarian cancer in 2009 — and she didn't have health insurance. She had let it lapse after the insurance companies had gouged her for years because she happened to have a pre-existing condition. She passed away in 2011, but that experience — of desperately trying to get her care and having to fill out bankruptcy paperwork at the same time, forever changed me. These experiences have shaped my time, my priorities, my approach to my four years in the U.S. House, and continue to serve as my motivation to run for Senate.
