Also, celebrating a big sports night with cliches [View email with images]( [Providence Journal] Wednesday August 19, 2020 [Subscribe Now]( --------------------------------------------------------------- [Providence Journal]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Good afternoon and welcome to This Just In. I'm Mike McDermott, managing editor of The Providence Journal, and I've seen enough [calamari jokes]( for one day, so I won't add to the tally. They were two very different projects, with something in common. Both were built by the state, then turned over to the city for maintenance. So why is it that the Providence Pedestrian Bridge still looks great, while the Apponaug Circulator in Warwick is turning into an eyesore? [Jim Hummel tried to find out](. The Rhode Island Department of Health [added another 103 coronavirus cases to its overall tally]( and also reported three deaths. The state now says that five people died on Sunday, making it the most deadly day in nearly two months. The state also updated [its list of cases by community](. Five towns have added no new cases in the last two weeks. In response to a Journal inquiry, the state Department of Health says that 9% of the people who tested positive during a week in early August [had recently attended a restaurant or bar](. But because many of those people had other potential sources of exposure, the state was only able to identify a restaurant as the place of transmission in a small number of instances. A nonpartisan organization, whose board includes a young doctor and two students at Brown University's Warren Alpert Medical School, is focused on making sure that people hospitalized right before Election Day [still get a chance to vote](. Yesterday afternoon, Brian Amaral of our Watchdog Team [posted a story]( about Armand "Chuck" Gagne , a 102-year-old veteran of World War II and nursing home resident who was stuck in a frustrating wait for a coronavirus test result that would allow him to welcome visitors once again. Just about an hour after the story was posted, Gagne's son got a call reporting that his dad was negative. A late-summer surge in Providence homicides [continued early this morning]( when a Pawtucket man was shot and killed inside a smoke shop on Branch Avenue. It was the city's fourth homicide in less than two weeks. [Subscribe to The Providence Journal]( A 30-year-old Cranston man has become the second person [charged federally]( with helping burn a police cruiser in Providence in early June. Lincoln police say they don't believe any crime led to [a dramatic explosion]( at a Sunoco station yesterday afternoon, which tore through the back of a Prius. Miraculously, the only injury that was reported was a gash on the arm of the Prius driver. A Florida appeals court has ruled that [police violated the rights of Patriots owner Robert Kraft]( and others by secretly recording them at a massage parlor, where they are alleged to have paid for sex acts. The ruling is a potential knockout punch (sports cliche number one) to the prosecution's case against Kraft. The Bruins take the ice in a few minutes, [with a chance to close out]( the Carolina Hurricanes (sports cliche number two) in their first-round playoff series. And the Celtics [play Game Two]( of their series against the 76ers at 6:30 (two cliches ought to do it). Did I mention that I love calamari? Especially with the hot peppers. Have a great night.
