Happy Father’s Day A few years ago, Charley invited our grandfather, Leigh Perkins, to go duck

Happy Father’s Day A few years ago, Charley invited our grandfather, Leigh Perkins, to go duck hunting with him in Arkansas. Here’s how Charley described it: It was cold—really cold—and we had to break through the ice to place the decoys in the water. Grandpa was in his 90s, and he had been on thousands of duck-hunting adventures before. But looking at him that morning, you would have thought it was his first time. The excitement in his eyes as he scanned the horizon reminded me of my six-year-old niece, Pippa. You could hear a youthful energy in his voice as we talked about the flight patterns and daily routines of the migrating ducks, and he wanted to know the specifics about local waterfowl habitat, food sources, and biological threats. His innate curiosity shone through, and his presence in the moment was inspiring. As the hunting slowed, I thought I noticed him getting cold, so I asked if he wanted to go in. He said, “No.” I asked him several times over the next 30 minutes and got the same answer each time. I finally remembered who I was talking to and realized that I had been asking the wrong question. “Grandpa, are you cold?” I asked. He promptly said, “Yes.” So we smiled at each other, packed up, and headed back to the warm fireplace at the house. Charley and Leigh Perkins Charley, men’s product strategy manager, and our grandfather in the cold pre-dawn of the Arkansas trip. Although not the original founder, Leigh Perkins is widely viewed as the “father” of the Orvis brand. His approach to life, especially in the outdoors, has had a huge influence on the company’s purpose and guiding beliefs. When he [passed away this spring]( it was the end to an amazing life, but it was also a chance to pause and reflect on all the lessons we, as a company and as individuals, had learned from him. The story above represents one of our favorites: A [life full of genuine curiosity, especially in nature]( helps you truly live in the moment and makes every day more fulfilling than the last. Hannah and Leigh Perkins Leigh with his granddaughter, Hannah Perkins, a women’s product developer at Orvis, in the summer of 2018. Our grandfather loved all that the natural world had to teach him and the joy that he found through connections to the outdoors. His presence in those moments was both powerful and contagious. His curiosity, drive, and attention to detail live on in all corners of the Orvis brand today. His example is why we love getting lost in the specifics of a product, why we live to be inspired by people and their stories and in turn inspire others, and why we love intimately connecting with the natural resource in order to best understand how to protect it. Hannah and Leigh Perkins Simon Perkins, president, and Leigh after a successful day of grouse hunting. His curiosity and the other ways in which our grandfather engaged with the natural resource have touched the three of us and many others within the greater Orvis “family” in a powerful way. His influence lives on in the special lessons he taught us about how to approach life, especially outside. It’s a legacy that we celebrate every day. We hope you have a great Father’s Day and enjoy celebrating the special life lessons shared by your loved ones.
