Happy holidays from our family to yours. [ORVIS©]( [Charley, Hannah, and Simon Perkins (from left) share a moment with Romi the black Lab at the Orvis home office in Vermont.] To our Orvis Family, Typically, the holidays are marked by traditions, celebrations, and gatherings. We travel to parties and reunions. We eat food together, exchange gifts, and eat more food. But mostly, the season is defined by the people around us, and the connections and memories that come from these moments. This year has been anything but typical, and many of us will find ourselves apart from those we often gather with during the holiday season. As anglers and former guides, we’ve been humbled many times by things outside our control. But even the fishless days are still meaningful time on the water, where we often learn something new about the world and ourselves. 2020 has produced many humbling, sobering, and tragic moments. It has also taught us many lessons to help us prioritize the important things in life as we look forward. While this year has limited the range of our day-to-day lives, it has also inspired more and more people to turn to the outdoor world for their health, well-being, and inspiration. For many, this year marked a first time on the water with a fly rod in hand or in the field with a dog at their side. We are warmed by the thought of all the adventures, personal connections, and memories to come in future years through these moments in nature. In a year marked by uncertainty and polarization, we have also seen our collective community unite on issues fundamental to the future health of outdoor recreation and the preservation of our natural resources. For example, we saw members of a diverse coalition—including commercial fishermen, Native and local communities, mining experts, economists, environmentalists, federal officials from both sides, local and national businesses, hunters, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts—lock arms in opposition to a Pebble Mine in Bristol Bay, Alaska. As a result, this pristine watershed is a step closer to being a protected American treasure for future generations to experience and enjoy. We also took another step forward in our dedication to improving access to fly fishing when we signed on to the [Angling for All Pledge](. We watched as you and others joined us in this commitment to making the sport of fly fishing more inclusive and equitable, and in turn creating a stronger community, pathways for new generations of conservationists, and ultimately a better world. We watched communities—including our own in Vermont and in Roanoke, VA—rally to help those most vulnerable to the pandemic. Our distribution center continues to make masks for those in need. And throughout an unprecedented year for retail companies everywhere, we’ve watched our employees—from our rod shop and distribution center to our retail stores across the U.S. and in the UK—work tirelessly to continue to create those meaningful connections with customers, all while keeping themselves and you safe. It’s a holiday season unlike any other, but the importance of family and our relationships remain constant. Although things might look and feel a little different this year, we will continue to find ways to prioritize the most important things in life. Thank you for being part of the Orvis family. You inspire us every day to continue to make great products, produce meaningful moments, and protect the places we all love. We hope this email finds you and yours healthy and planning safe ways to connect and make memories. [Wishing your the best this holiday season -Simon, Charley, and Hanna Perkins.
