What to Watch Today 👀 Jackson Hole The annual Jackson Hole Economic Symposium in Jackson Hole, WY, kicks off today, and the market is eagerly awaiting Fed Chairman Jerome Powell's appearance on Friday. Powell's speech could include some hints on the Fed's outlook for fiscal and economic policy, including rate hikes. Expect some volatility around Powell's speech Friday, but we could see a spike in activity today as investors position themselves for tomorrow's speech. International 🌍 Asia Hong Kong's Hang Seng Composite rallied 3.6% overnight, while the Shanghai Composite added 1.0%. Australia's ASX 200 gained 0.7% on its trading session. Europe European benchmarks are in the green midway through their trading session. The UK FTSE 100 is up 0.2%, but its down sharply from its intraday highs. The German DAX is riding a 0.3% gain, and the Euro Stoxx 600 has advanced 0.2%. Major Earnings 💰 - The Toronto Dominion Bank [TD] ... AM - Dollar General [DG] ... The CAD and engineering firm reported its Q2 earnings after Wednesday's closing bell, and the results were promising. Autodesk reported non-GAAP earnings of $1.65 per share, marking a 33% increase from last year's Q3 EPS of $1.21, and beat the Street's $1.57 EPS target. Revenues came in at $1.24 billion, which also marked substantial growth from the year-earlier quarter's $1.06 billion revenue figure. Analysts only expected $1.22 billion in revenues. Autodesk also hiked its Q3 and fiscal 2023 full-year guidance in response to the strong quarter. It's new guidance falls in line with consensus estimates. ADSK is leading the S&P 500 with a 9.8% gain with strong trading volume. My Take: Autodesk has struggled in 2022, as has most of the market. However, the stock is showing signs of life, and it has an intact up-trend dating back to the middle of July. Today's jump could mark the start of another upswing. Snowflake [SNOW] - Last Close: $159.49 Strong earnings are rallying shares of Snowflake. The cloud-based data platform reported its fiscal Q2 results this morning, and investors are very bullish on what they saw. Snowflake reported a wider fiscal Q2 loss of $0.70 per share that fell short of the -($0.58) consensus EPS estimate. However, the firm reported a massive surge in revenues from last year. Snowflake generated revenues of $497.2 million in Q2, nearly double the year-earlier quarter's total of $272.2 million. The sales numbers beat the consensus forecast of $467.3 million by a margin of nearly $30 million. SNOW is breaking out with a 19.0% gain on the strong quarter. My Take: This stock has been in the dumps for the past couple of months, but today's earnings report could bring it back to life. This Snowflake could be a good long-term investment, but make sure you don't get caught in a pullback in the event this rally proves to run a little too hot. Tesla [TSLA] - Last Close: $297.10 Tesla is in the limelight today as it executes a previously announced stock split. The leading American EV company will execute a 3-for-1 stock split at today's opening bell, bringing share prices down to around $300 apiece. Investors are excited about the stock split, but it will have virtually no impact on the company or its outlook. Other bullish news around the stock include recent comments from billionaire investor Rob Baron, who said he expects to make three to five times more money in Tesla stock over the next decade. TSLA is trading actively with a 2.2% gain on the upbeat news. My Take: Stock splits don't do anything but lower the face value of shares. In today's fractional trading-enabled world, stock splits don't seem quite as consequential as they did in the past, but Tesla is no ordinary stock. Clearside Biomedical [CLSD] - Last Close: $1.47 Clearside is buzzing after an early morning announcement. The biopharma firm announced today that its Chief Medical Officer and Chief Development Officer, Thomas A. Ciulla, M.D., will appear at the Ophthalmology Futures Retina Forum 2022 on August 31, 2022. Dr. Ciulia will participate in an industry panel and provide a company overview to attendees. Traders are hoping the company will use the conference to unveil new clinical data or another important announcement that could be a rally catalyst. So far, no hints on what could be revealed, but the stock is reacting favorably to the news. Shares of CLSD are up 20.4% in the premarket. My Take: There's no telling what could happen at the medical conference next week, but a lot of investors are betting that some type of catalyst will come out of the event. It's a short-term speculative trade opportunity, but you're largely going to be flying in the dark until Aug. 31st. Kiora Pharmaceuticals [KPRX] - Last Close: $0.1321 A bullish analyst note is lifting shares of Kiora Pharma in today's premarket. The very-tiny specialty pharma firm is up big after Ladenburg Thalmann analyst Matthew Kaplan initiated coverage on the stock with a "buy" rating and a price target of $6.50. Kaplan's price target represents a whopping 4,820%+ upside from the stock's current price point. Other specifics to come out of the Kaplan note weren't immediately available at the time of writing, but share prices are rallying on the news. KPRX is this morning's most actively-traded premarket stock, and it's showing a 61.1% gain. My Take: Small stock with a very tiny float making a big move on a routine analyst note. I smell a pump and dump here, so tread lightly. As always, don't get caught holding the bag.
