But I am writing to ask you to return your focus to the other two branches of government, the legislative branch and the Supreme Court. The U.S. Senate confirms Supreme Court justices, and will almost certainly vote on the confirmation of one (or more!) Supreme Court justices over the next several years. The past few years have been a reminder of the perils of ignoring the Supreme Court, not to mention the dozens of lower courts whose decisions affect our lives. And if we lose the Senate race here in Michigan, Republicans will almost certainly take control of the U.S. Senate and have the power to confirm extreme nominees put forward by Donald Trump or block those advanced by Kamala Harris. What’s more, the Supreme Court could rule on any number of issues in the next several years, from environmental protections to gun violence prevention to birth control and IVF. And one of the only significant ways to push back on political Supreme Court decisions is to actually legislate these issues in the Senate. While the Supreme Court has been reversing issues based only in case law, like Roe v. Wade, it’s significantly harder to change things that are actually voted into law.
