I was born and raised in California, where I learned the value of hard work and community as a bartender, a history teacher, and a small business owner. 2. I went on to work closely with Rep. Elijah Cummings as a congressional investigator and helped protect veterans and low-income families from predatory for-profit colleges. 3. While working in Congress, I fought to pass bipartisan anti-gun trafficking laws after the tragic massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary. 4. I worked on the effort in the California legislature to ensure marijuana was legalized equitably for communities of color who were the most impacted by the failed âWar on Drugs.â [Alternate text] 5.
