March 7, 1965: A 25-year-old activist named John Lewis led over 600 marchers across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, facing brutal attacks by oncoming state troopers. Months earlier, the Voting Rights Act of 1964 passed but did little in some parts of the country like Dallas County, Alabama where more than 50% of the population was Black but only accounted for 2% of the voters. Fast forward to 2024: We just won the right to create a SECOND Black voting district in Alabama last year. The fight for Civil Rights and equal representation in our nation’s capital is far from over… We deserve real representation and real solutions from Congress — but with an extreme GOP actively trying to dilute the Voting Rights Act as we know it and party members who openly espouse White Supremacist ideals, we won’t get there with our current leadership.
