More than 2 years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, a new tradition began: Juneteenth. Today we celebrate the emancipation of enslaved African American here in the US. But on this day where we remember the horrific history of the beginnings of our country, many on the far-right are trying to whitewash it or eliminate it all together. MAGA Extremists like Ron DeSantis are banning books with any mention of slavery, and state legislatures across the country are passing Jim Crow-era voter suppression laws. On a day that celebrates the progress we’ve made in the fight towards justice, extremist forces in this country are hell-bent on silencing Black voices and disenfranchising Black voters. We won’t stand for that. We’re at a crossroads in our nation’s history, and we have an obligation to act. It’s up to us to build an American future where Black voices are uplifted and Black people are represented. [At Elect Black Democrats, that is our entire mission.
