Gold wasteland

Once lush trees are now bare. Children develop burning rashes and skin lesions after swimming in the nearby river. Cancer and miscarriage rates have skyrocketed. Barrick Gold’s massive mine in the Dominican Republic has forced 450 families living nearby to come to a heartbreaking decision that they have to leave if they want to survive. But they can’t afford to move – and the government is refusing to relocate them. That’s where we come in. If we can help them get scientific proof that the mine is poisoning the community, insiders say the government will HAVE to listen. But we need to move FAST. These families are running out of options and need to quickly raise the funds to commission water and soil tests so that they can force the government to act. Can you help? And it became even more urgent when Barrick Gold applied for a permit to EXPAND the Pueblo Viejo mine and create a new mega-mine. But the government has so far refused to help. Desperate to get their attention, late last year the community waged a powerful protest, delivering Ekō’s 40,000-strong petition demanding that officials step in to help these families before it's too late. But unless there is irrefutable proof that the mine is harming the surrounding communities, the government is unlikely to stand up to Barrick Gold. If they can quickly raise enough, the community will hire experts to do water and soil tests in the six communities to prove that there are high levels of heavy metals, causing people to get sick. With this evidence, the government will be forced to help the families finally escape this gold mine wasteland – and stop Barrick Gold from further decimating local communities. It’s taken years to get this far – can you help 450 families take this over the finish line and beat Barrick Gold?
