Our partner Rainforest Trust and groups on the ground in Guinea are working overtime to create a new 560,000-acre national park before owners of the mega Simandou mine can ram a new 100-mile railway straight through the heart of this fragile rainforest ecosystem. This kind of industrial development is devastating to these animals’ survival. More than 80% of the Western Chimpanzees that call the area home have already been wiped out…without protection like this, we’ll lose them forever. Together we’ve helped Rainforest Trust buy and protect massive, critical swathes of ecosystems from Colombia to Indonesia. Here’s our chance to do it again and protect another irreplaceable part of our planet’s nature. It couldn’t be more needed – extensive illegal logging and timber trafficking across the border between the countries – not to mention poaching – already poses an existential threat to the habitat. And now this railroad could be on the way! But logging, hunting, and mining would be strictly prohibited in the new park. Our partners are working with the government of Guinea and local communities to ensure the new park is supported and resourced.
