For kids who grew up in working-class families like mine, a college degree and beyond should be a path to the middle class — but instead, it's become a lifelong burden that continues to hold them back. Nearly every household, from union families to grandparents that co-signed loans for their grandkids, is affected by the crushing weight of student loan debt. So when interest and collections were paused during the pandemic, it was a huge relief to millions of borrowers. Suddenly we had hundreds of dollars a month to put back into the economy. We bought homes, started families, and saw record economic growth. But while President Biden and Democrats fought tooth and nail to continue to provide relief to borrowers who need it most, Brian Fitzpatrick and his fellow Republicans have blocked him every step of the way. Fitzpatrick and his cronies even voted to retroactively charge interest on the loans! With repayments beginning next month, so many of my friends are stressing about their household budgets. Some have applied for Biden's latest relief program. But with Republicans promising once again to undo those efforts, borrowers are worried the relief they desperately need won't happen. We need a representative who wants to help the nearly 1 in 7 Americans who have student loan debt — and pass a permanent solution once and for all. That's me. If elected, I’m committed to expanding public forgiveness programs, Pell Grants, and GI bill funding as well as bringing down the cost of college.
