Around the time we started building egghead, Facebook was starting to develop GraphQL.
In 2015, they open-sourced the GraphQL spec.
We were skeptical.
REST has been good for us at egghead.
âShould we try it?â I thought.
After hearing about it more and more chatter, we started evaluating GraphQL.
And wow.
It has completely blown our minds. ð¤¯
Weâve started slow. Using GraphQL to augment our existing components and pages as we slowly migrate to using GraphQL completely. It works great side by side with our existing REST endpoints that will likely drive at least a portion of our site for a few more years.
Weâre ready to go all in and make GraphQL our primary API.
Because itâs wonderful. And very friendly to use.
The absolute powerhouse dominating the GraphQL landscape is Apollo. The Apollo team has produced an amazing suite of tools around GraphQL to make your life easier and allow you to take advantage of this amazing paradigm in your own applications.
GraphQL is often associated with React, but donât let that fool you. Apollo isnât restricted to React, and they have built a client that works with any (most?) JavaScript frameworks. Or even no framework.
The Apollo client is straightforward to use. And once you get the basics of GraphQL and shift your mindset, it quickly becomes second nature.
Weâre glad we decided to try something new.
