Strong opinions about Wes Bos. Are you familiar with Wes Bos? He’s this super friendly Canadian fella who puts out screencast courses on the internet for developers to learn from. Good courses! Courses that we use to learn stuff, just like you do. [Image] As egghead has evolved over the years, we’ve had the pleasure of working with lots of amazing instructors. Over 130! It’s been an interesting evolution as we’ve grown and expanded. The royalty model works well, the instructors get paid, and you fine folks get to enjoy the benefit of absorbing the quality knowledge that they share with you. One of our core philosophies is to be as aggressively free as possible. We release everything free for at least a week, and a large portion of the entire catalog is available to the world right now… for free! It’s great, and we love it. Something interesting that we’ve run into when trying to get folks to record screencasts to share with egghead members is a simple objection: “I really want to do the Wes Bos thing.” 🤔 Wes makes a great living selling high-quality learning products for web developers. The desire to emulate that is understandable! This presents a couple of problems for egghead. The royalty model of our standard subscription and aggressively free approach can’t promise the same returns for content creators as a standalone product release. egghead royalties provide a steady stream of income, and it works out very well over time after an initial bump when a new course is released. Another problem is that a mega-course release drains the royalty pool for all of the other instructors. By the nature of it, royalties are a zero-sum game. It’s simply not fair. The steady cadence of ~weekly releases of bite-sized, focused courses steadies it out and keeps everything on equal footing for all of the amazing instructors creating content. Nobody gets burned out. There are no deadlines. The pressure is very low. It’s great. Everybody wins. Folks like you get high-quality content to level-up your skills, and the instructors get an outlet for casually releasing content on an ad-free, royalty-driven platform. But what about folks who want a little pressure? Ambitious folks that want to “go big” and take their knowledge sharing to the next level? Wes Bos as a Service Here’s the “rub” about doing “that Wes Bos thing”… Wes has spent years building a custom platform for selling his products. He does everything himself. It’s his full-time job! It’s a lot of work. egghead at its core is a content management system. A platform for selling products. We are able to market, sell, manage, build, and deliver content for creators. That’s what we do as a team. We do all that so our instructors can just…instruct. When somebody like Kent C. Dodds comes to us with an idea that is so big, so valuable, that it’d break our royalty model, we’re left with a couple of choices. The sad choice would be to tell Kent, “That’s a great idea, but it doesn’t fit our business model. It would confuse and upset people if they knew we participated. Good luck Kent, hope you can get that all done in the next 3 years.” Or, we could say “Kent, we’ve been working together for four years and we want to continue working with you for as long as we’re able. Let’s make something badass that will help as many devs as possible. high five” There’s only one choice here, folks… WBaaS. (I asked Wes if he was cool with this code name. He laughed and said yes!) Wes Bos as a Service is born. WBaaS uses egghead infrastructure as a platform and design agency to release badass extended, deep-dive standalone courses with the best instructors on the internet that want to take their knowledge sharing career to the next level. What does that mean for egghead.io? It doesn’t change the value we deliver! We are releasing amazing courses every ~week. Nothing is lost. We will continue to be aggressively free for folks that can’t afford a membership. We will continue to be a place where new content creators can enjoy mentorship and training to learn how to produce screencasts. We will be working with folks like Kent C. Dodds to launch bigger products so they can take their content creation careers to the next level. We will make sure that egghead members get the best discounts on these products, as well as early access, and potentially exclusive bonuses as part of their membership. (We’re also excited about Kent’s upcoming React courses that will be released on egghead.io!) [Image]( Kent’s amazing first product is [Testing JavaScript](. It’s a detailed, 5-hour deep dive that will take you from the core fundamentals of testing JavaScript apps all the way through rock-solid, production-ready test strategies using the framework of your choice. As the first egghead member to use WBaaS, Kent nailed it. It’s currently 40% off, which is an incredible value for what it is. You should [check it out]( if you haven't already and care about shipping high-quality JavaScript apps to your users. Cheers, Joel PS I've got deep feelings about change and new things too.
