Source: NASA/GSFC For the first time in eight years of operation in the orbit of Mars, the artificial satellite for the study of the Martian atmosphere MAVEN witnessed two different types of ultraviolet auroras. They appeared as a result of solar storms that began on August 27. MAVEN is the only apparatus on Mars capable of observing solar activity and at the same time the reaction of the Martian atmosphere to it. Real-time analysis and simulations of solar storms from NASA's Moon to Mars Space Weather Analysis Office service allow the artificial satellite team to accurately predict when the next solar storm will hit the Red Planet. Correct prediction is critical to protecting ongoing missions and future human exploration of Mars because, unlike Earth, the Red Planet lacks a magnetic field to shield against damaging solar radiation. Using space weather models of the propagation of solar coronal mass ejections, we have determined when a new storm will reach and affect Mars. This allowed the MAVEN team to anticipate some unusual atmospheric perturbations resulting from powerful solar activity. Christina Lee, MAVEN mission team member Particles from solar storms have caused bright auroras in the ultraviolet range in the Martian atmosphere. MAVEN observed two types of them: diffuse and proton. In part, this simultaneity is due to the coincidence of time. Mars is ending its dust storm season, which happens every year when the planet is closest to the Sun. Dust heats the atmosphere so much that water vapor reaches high altitudes, where it is split by solar radiation, in the process of which hydrogen atoms are released. When the solar wind collides with them, the day side of the planet is illuminated by ultraviolet light. In this case, the proton auroras coincided with an event where more energetic particles traveled even deeper into the atmosphere and caused diffuse auroras all over the night side of the Red Planet. Such a light show is a signal to the MAVEN team of upcoming changes in the behavior of Mars. Now the Sun is increasing its activity and will reach its maximum in 2024-25. Therefore, new events will be expected in the atmosphere of Mars. It is exciting to be the first to observe such auroras in a sufficiently long period of the mission. We still need to learn a lot about the atmosphere of Mars and the influence of solar activity on it. Our team can't wait for the next few years to see MAVEN's success in some of the most extreme environments ever.
