EdWeek Market Brief
Hello, edBiz Readers: COVID cases are soaring across much of the country, which has [led some schools to close and imperiled the in-person reopenings of countless others](TcOLYl2N_:m:1:3125711346:A3E5EE0AD0306796DF43A14F6D257B8F:r), as well as [colleges](TcOLYl2N_:m:1:3125711346:A3E5EE0AD0306796DF43A14F6D257B8F:r). In addition to the uncertainty that creates for students and families, it has big implications for the economy, and for education companies trying to gauge whether lessons over the next year will be delivered through remote, in-person, or hybrid means. •
Amid that grim backdrop, President-elect Joe Biden has put in place his transition team for the U.S. Department of Education. It's led by Stanford University emeritus professor [Linda Darling Hammond](TcOLYl2N_:m:1:3125711346:A3E5EE0AD0306796DF43A14F6D257B8F:r) and heavily populated with [Obama administration](TcOLYl2N_:m:1:3125711346:A3E5EE0AD0306796DF43A14F6D257B8F:r) alums and union officials. •
Even as education businesses in the K-12 and college markets have struggled during the pandemic, [companies that weren't in the education space previously are migrating into it](TcOLYl2N_:m:1:3125711346:A3E5EE0AD0306796DF43A14F6D257B8F:r). They've been enticed by a landscape newly reliant on remote learning and open to fresh approaches to delivering content and facilitating online communication. •
In another sign of COVID's global reach, the number of [international students studying at U.S. colleges has plummeted](TcOLYl2N_:m:1:3125711346:A3E5EE0AD0306796DF43A14F6D257B8F:r) over the past year, according to a report in Inside Higher Ed. One in five students students from outside the U.S. are taking classes online. We'll be keeping an eye out for signals on how the Biden administration will put its stamp on education policy, from [federal aid for K-12 schools](TcOLYl2N_:m:1:3125711346:A3E5EE0AD0306796DF43A14F6D257B8F:r) to [college loans](TcOLYl2N_:m:1:3125711346:A3E5EE0AD0306796DF43A14F6D257B8F:r).
