IEA E-Newsletter February 2024 [View online]( [DONATE]( [VOLUNTEER]( [CONTACT US]( While every day is our favorite day at IEA, there is something magical about the beginning of the year. We welcomed our Academy students back from the long holiday break, excited to see their smiling faces, their passion for learning and their speed zipping around the yard at break time. Later this month, we are eager to greet our CDB scholars, their parents, and our alums at the annual Bradley Seminar. Our first Gifted Support Group meeting of the year will focus on the topic of Homeschooling. We are also sharing the bittersweet news that our President and Co-Founder of IEA, Elizabeth D. Jones will be retiring later this year. ELIZABETH JONES ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT LATER THIS YEAR . Elizabeth (Betsy) D. Jones, President of IEA, has announced that she will begin her transition toward retirement later this year. Following the identification of the new President, Betsy will continue to serve as Senior Advisor to support the Board and the transfer of leadership. A search firm has been hired to assist in the identification of the new leader. Betsy co-founded IEA with James W. Davis in 1998 and she has served as President for the past 25 years. What an amazing legacy she is leaving us with. We are sharing Betsy's letter to our IEA Community as well as a letter from our Board Chair, Byron Lichtenstein. [LETTER FROM BETSY]( [LETTER FROM BYRON]( ACADEMY . In January we welcomed students back for our Spring 2024 session. Our students are having a blast making neuron diagrams from Play-Doh, engineering bridges and cars using LEGO, and learning to do stop motion animation. We have a few spots available for our family-favorite online series, Marine Invertebrates, with Grayson, IEA Academy’s paleobiologist and animal expert! This class is for students 10-14 years old. Register by Wednesday, February 14 to join this aquatic adventure. [REGISTER HERE]( PUSD INNOVATION CLUBS . Over the last few months, IEA has provided Innovation Clubs to 170+ students in Pasadena Unified School District Elementary Schools! Friday was the [Innovation Exposition]( and we had nearly 40 projects submitted by students we mentored across the 7 schools! More of the students from our clubs placed than ever before, and it was great to see more schools represented in the winners. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards were given for each of the 6 categories, and 9 projects from our students, from 5 schools we work with, placed! We had 5 3rd place winners, 1 2nd place winner, and 3 1st place winners across the categories. We are so proud of all our Innovation Club students who participated and congratulate them all on a spectacular job well done! We're excited to continue providing Innovation Clubs as a part of PUSD's gifted program in the 2024-2025 school year. EXPLORE . We are so excited to support our EXPLORE students who are competing in [iGEM24](, the world’s biggest synthetic biology competition! Follow their progress as they design and conduct their research and [fundraise]( to offset their travel and registration costs. [FOLLOW ON TWITTER]( [FOLLOW ON INSTAGRAM]( CAROLINE D.
