Good Memories: Looking Back at Car Shows While We’re Staying Home
While we’re all stuck inside, avoiding face-to-face social interactions, we thought we’d take a look back at some of our favorite shows from the past few years. Since we can’t have shows at least for the time being, and Riverside 5 was the only semblance of a car meet we’re likely to experience this spring, here are some of our fond memories from 2018 and 2019 that we dearly miss right about now. Fortunately, we have plenty of projects to keep us busy, like our Assembled by ECS DIY Kits (which are on sale right now) along with the Schwaben tools you need to get the job done. While you’re taking a break, enjoy some memories of shows from years past with us and hold onto that hope that we will soon be through this traumatic global experience.

In 2018, we took a few of our staff and the MK7.5 GTI we gave away to the winner of our sweepstakes to the Euro District. This show was an early foray of ours back into car show attendance and something we quite enjoyed. The memories still have yet to fade. At least we have some incredible photography of the show cars that participated to hold onto.

NEO Cars and Coffee, 2018

Hosting Cars and Coffee at our facility in Ohio has been a blast. Watching our parking lot fill up the first time was a surreal experience and one that we have continued to replicate over the past two years. We open our doors to anyone who wants to see behind the curtain and poke around our R&D shop all while enjoying coffee and breakfast. Cars and Coffee events are always some of my favorites due to the relaxed atmosphere and companionship. They’re about everyone enjoying a common hobby, not vying for awards or trophies. With the lack of competition, it makes approaching owners and interesting cars much less intimidating. Cars and Coffee has always been somewhere I make new friends and find new inspiration since there is such a variety. Hopefully, by the end of this season, we will at least have a few left to attend.

European Experience, 2018

Being from the south, European Experience is one of two chances I have to enjoy car shenanigans with my friends from back home. In 2018, I drove down to meet them in Nashville before we drove the remaining nine hours to Savannah, Georgia to enjoy some beach time and a wonderful car show. EUEX has a completely unique vibe since it is held in a relaxing and exciting location. The attendees have a certain dedication to quality that I think is exclusive to very few shows, EUEX being one. For me, it is always exciting to drive such a far distance and to enjoy my favorite seafood. I grew up going to the area to visit my grandparents, who lived on Saint Simon’s Island for most of my life. It is an emotional trip where I can experience that area as an adult and make memories with my friends all through the lens of automotive enthusiasm.

Fuel Cars and Coffee, Cincinnati 2018

Cincinnati is nothing like I expected. I had never been before I moved up to Ohio and found that I had some friends who lived there. With a place to stay whenever I want to visit, it became a regular weekend destination where we could spend the weekend working on our cars in my friend’s expansive garage and driveway and attend the spectacular Fuel Cars and Coffee. Fuel is a coffee and breakfast spot nestled downtown against the river that is a hotbed of enthusiast activity. Every Saturday morning, the tiny parking lot and side street fill with rare and modified cars, including the owner’s BMW 2002s, for a true cars and coffee vibe.

Riverside 4, Chattanooga 2019

In my hometown of Chattanooga, Riverside takes place every spring. Last year was my third year in attendance of the four that have been held since 2015 and it did not disappoint. Something that I think speaks to enthusiast nature is the ability to persist in spite of inconveniences. It rained the entire time, was rather cold, and I dealt with some unexpected gremlins in my E30. That trip made me realize that nothing can stop a persistent enthusiast bent on having a good time. Despite my then original convertible top allowing the outside weather to soak my dog and me to the bone, and dealing with electrical issues as a result, I was still able to patch things together and make it work so I could enjoy the weekend with my friends and family.

As we have continued to host the NEO C&C events here at our facility, the attendance and excitement have grown. The difference between our first and most recent Cars and Coffee events is staggering. Vendor participation, local car clubs, racing bodies, and owners from a surprisingly wide-reaching surrounding area all gather with us at ECS Tuning for an enjoyable morning.

Overall, this whole stay at home thing hasn’t been the absolute worst. It has given us the opportunity to reflect on what we enjoy, like car shows with friends, and reminds us what we have that we might take for granted. Above that, however, it is the perfect chance to focus on projects we may have put off and to think about what we can do rather than what we can’t. We can’t go to car shows, but we can work on our cars, work on our garages, tackle home improvement jobs, and even discover new hobbies. We want to hear how you’ve been staying busy, so please, email cdaugherty@ecstuning.com with some of your latest stay at home projects for a chance to be featured in next week’s article. And remember, stay positive and stay busy. We’ll get through this just like we always do. So grab an Assembled by ECS kit and get wrenching. Show it off with us and you might see your project in next week’s Tuned In.
