In this new newsletter youâll get one actionable business idea & learn marketing tactics to build your own ecommerce store. Letâs get cracking with this weekâs idea and steps to generate revenue! ð What we've seen Reddit is currently going through a period of turbulence with thousands of subreddits going dark indefinitely. Moderators are protesting the API charge that has caused apps like Apollo & Reddit is Fun to shut down. These new changes mean that third party apps which help moderators effectively manage large subreddits are now unusable, causing large amounts of unrest in the community. Whilst the protest was scheduled for the 12th-14th of June, after an AMA and a leaked memo from the CEO Steve Huffman, many subreddits are still not visible on the app. Out of the 8000+ subreddits, we see that 3400 of them are still protesting. It is important to note that these moderators are currently volunteers and unlike Facebook who pay large sums of money for their moderation, these Reddit mods are âworkingâ for free. â¹ï¸ Why this matters Before Reddit was Reddit, Reddit was Digg. Digg, was a content and news site where users could vote for the content they liked the most which would then make it to the front page. However in 2010, Digg went through a redesign which angered their power users. They staged a revolt known as âQuit Digg Dayâ where they began to upvote all links that are submitted by Reddit. This meant that Diggâs front page was filled with Reddit content which led to over 9000 new users and 250k DAUâs for the underdog site. 2 weeks later, the number of search queries for Reddit had overtaken those of the incumbent & the rest is history. With all this revolting on Reddit, it may be worth building an audience on an alternative site to be best positioned for success. ð¡The idea Create and grow similar subreddits on [(. Squabbles is a Reddit alternative that is growing rapidly. There is an opportunity to create a number of âcommunitiesâ on the platform that are essentially duplicates of previous subreddits. By building an audience on this alternative site, you can grow communities that are able to be monetised once the site gains more traction. There are also a number of other reddit alternatives you can do this for.
