Dear Fellow Patriot, I never imagined having to write a letter like this — even in my worst nightmare. Although we have never met, I pray that you will take a moment to read this and help me fight for the bravest warrior I know: my husband, Major Mathew Golsteyn. Matt is a highly decorated Green Beret who graduated from West Point and served multiple tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was awarded an interim Silver Star in 2011 as a placeholder for the Distinguished Service Cross — our nation's second highest award for valor — for his heroic actions in Afghanistan. More than this, Matt is a loving husband, a dedicated father, and a most loyal friend. This is a photo of Matt with our baby boy, Henry. [family]( He may look familiar to you and that's because his story has garnered a great deal of national media attention especially in the last few months. You see, Matt is the Green Beret who has been charged with premeditated murder for killing a known Taliban bomb-maker while serving in Afghanistan in 2010. After a six-day Board of Inquiry in 2015 the Army's own panel concluded that Matt did not violate the standing rules of engagement or the law of armed conflict. Now, nine years after the incident, the Army claims to have "new evidence" that Matt "murdered" this known enemy combatant. If convicted, Matt faces a minimum of life in prison, and ultimately, he could face the death penalty. I know it sounds incredible, but here is what happened… In 2010, Matt deployed to Afghanistan with the 3rd Special Forces Group. During the largest operation of the entire war, two Marines working with his unit were killed by an improvised explosive device (IED) planted on a booby-trapped door. Three additional Marines were injured. After the battle, a local tribal leader identified the Taliban bomb-maker responsible for the attack, and Matt's team brought the suspect into custody. Unfortunately, due to the Rules of Engagement (ROEs), they had to release the enemy combatant even though he was a great danger to our troops. Matt knew the IED maker still posed an imminent threat to the men under his command and the Afghan civilians who were aiding them — so Matt placed himself in grave danger to set up an ambush in case the bomb-maker attempted to rejoin his terrorist unit. He was right, and the insurgent did head back to his combat unit. My friend, Matt engaged and ultimately killed the Taliban insurgent to keep the bomb-maker from harming more of his men and to protect the local informants from retaliation. His actions were in accordance with the ROEs and consistent with U.S. tactics conducted throughout the war. When Matt returned home from that deployment, he was highly recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to work clandestine operations. During a pre-employment polygraph test, Matt discussed his combat experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan. He never thought twice about that conversation because he did nothing wrong. The CIA offered him the job, and he was excited about the opportunity to serve our county in a new capacity. But the Army opened an investigation based on words attributed to Matt by a special agent with the Criminal Investigative Division (CID). That's right, my friend. The agent put his words into Matt's mouth and admitted it under oath! A FOUR-YEAR investigation yielded no evidence of wrongdoing, and Matt was never charged with any crime. However, the Army rescinded Matt's approved Distinguished Service Cross and stripped him of his Special Forces tab — honors he worked so very hard to earn. This was a slap in the face to an honorable and highly decorated warrior. But we moved on and started over. Then in 2016, the Army used Matt's Fox News interview as an excuse to reopen the investigation. And in December 2018—barely two months after Henry was born — the Army recalled Matt to active duty at Fort Bragg for the sole purpose of charging him with premeditated murder. As I have said in the many interviews I've given these past few months, I know my husband. I know his heart and his character. And I know he would not and did not "murder" anyone. He did the job he was sent to do. Matt saved countless American and Afghan lives by killing a terrorist who had the blood of at least two Marines on his hands. And not only did the Army find no evidence of a crime. But Commanders looked my husband in the eye and told him he did the right thing. In fact, the Marine Corps Commanders on the ground with Matt in Afghanistan testified on his behalf and his men have all stood by him — despite being harassed and threatened by Army investigators and lawyers. Yet TWO years after the Fox News interview, EIGHT years after the CIA employment polygraph, and nearly a DECADE after the incident, the Army has charged Matt with "premeditated murder" citing new evidence. Even though there is NOTHING that was not already considered by the Army during the Board of Inquiry. Premeditated murder is punishable by the death penalty. That's right. If Matt is found guilty, the very government that he risked his life to defend for the past 16 years could put him to death. Henry is only six months old, and it breaks my heart to imagine him growing up without his father. Matt also has a 12-year old son who lives with us full-time. Matt was lucky enough to survive the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but he came home to another. His life has been ripped apart by the pervasive moral cowardice of Army leadership. My friend, it is absolutely reprehensible what the Army is doing to my husband. That is why our family is so grateful for United American Patriots (UAP), an organization run by Bull Gurfein, a retired Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel. UAP has helped 37 service members clear their names or reduce their sentences. They have stood beside Matt throughout this nightmare. UAP has generously offered to help pay for Matt's legal defense as he faces this outrageous charge. But first, they have to raise money for a trial and everything that goes into it — legal research, investigators, expert witnesses, legal motions and so much more. UAP is a non-profit organization, which means they do not receive any funding from the government — only private donations from patriotic Americans. I am asking for your help. [Will you make a special, tax-deductible donation of $35, $50, $100 or more to help UAP fight for Matt's life?]( With UAP's help, we've hired an outstanding attorney who is tirelessly working to defend Matt. Just three days after Matt was charged, both his attorney and I appeared on Fox News. Shortly after those interviews, President Trump tweeted that he would be reviewing Matt's case, giving us renewed hope. But of course, we can't depend on the President to circumvent the legal process with a pardon. Unfortunately, we must prepare for a long, drawn-out trial. [That's why I am asking you to make a special, tax-deductible gift to UAP to help pay the legal bills for Matt and other service members who have also been wrongly accused.]( Defending oneself against a government with unlimited resources is a daunting and expensive task. It can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, and I pray that you will find it in your heart to help UAP fight for my husband. Thank you in advance for your support. It means the world to my family and to me. Very gratefully, Julie Golsteyn P.S. Despite the charges Matt faces, I consider myself blessed to have him here. We are able to spend holidays and weekends together with our sons. So many military families are not so fortunate — including the families of the two U.S. Marines, SGT Jeremy McQueary and LCPL Larry Johnson, who were killed by that Taliban bomb-maker. It is long overdue that someone in our Army's leadership exhibit some moral courage and come out from underneath the blanket of anonymity under which they hide and take responsibility for this farce. It is time to dismiss this preposterous charge against Matt. But we cannot depend on the people in charge to make the right decision, and we must begin preparing for court martial.
