My wife, Dale Ann, calls me Hubristic Hugh after I once joined a gym to lose weight. I swore I would lose a mere 10 pounds if I just joined up. After a few months, I told my wife, “Hey, I haven’t lost a single pound! I’m gonna have to get down there to see what the heck is going on!” That’s why gyms and fitness clubs do so well. People join but they don’t actually go. Instead of making futile resolutions you know you won’t keep, try this: commit to doing one new thing every year. Take on one new project, something you’ve never done before. Be daring. Come out of your shell and say hello to five new strangers every day. Learn to dance. Master gourmet cooking or learn how to bake. Take flying lessons or learn how to sail. There are so many things to do in life, it would be a pity to miss so much. Travel to foreign lands or become proficient in a new software program. Imagine how much you would know at 65 years of age had you just started to do just one new thing a year, starting at age 30! A friend of mine learned small engine repair at his local college after retiring from the police force. Then he sailed his 45’ sailboat to Europe, back to the Caribbean and home up the East Coast. Robert did all that in his 60s with his wife and cat. The cat, unfortunately, didn’t make it. Buried at sea.
