[View in browser]( | [Access the APAC tech ecosystem on e27]( [The soliloquy of a (ex) wannabe entrepreneur]( Editor's Note On Tuesday, I attended a [TED session]( (calling it a TED talk would be wrong) about Big Data. My key takeaway is this: More than any other industry, people who work in the field seem acutely aware of the ethical dilemma at the core of the industry. Granted, this talk didn't include the likes of Amazon, Google or Alibaba, but the three speakers all laid-out the case for why Big Data is awesome (and why it is equally terrifying). It was actually heartening to see people who make their living in Big Data be so self-aware about how the public perceives the technology. It is easy to dismiss the Terminator 2 prophets of doom, but it is less easy to ignore concerns about privacy, misguided algorithms and (most importantly) the future of employment. Nobody on the stage pretended to have the answers, but it was encouraging to see that Big Data insiders are grappling with the technology's future. If those in control of the technology are self-aware of its ethical problems, it makes it far more likely the end-product will provide more benefit than harm to society. -Kevin Articles you shouldn't miss [Lattice80 Founder dropped as brand ambassador for Singapore Tourism Board]( by [Kevin McSpadden]( [Diabetes management platform Health2Sync raises US$6M series B to accelerate expansion to Japan]( by [Edison Chen]( [InterVest, Kejora Ventures close US$60M for its US$100M Southeast Asia fund]( by [Anisa Menur A.
