A good idea is working its way to great [DWR Logo]( July 23, 2024 Hi Reader The media has moved on, but the fundamentals are only getting better. It’s only been two months since a media mini-firestorm erupted around copper. Copper was on its best run in years - up 40% in five months. Bloomberg fueled the frenzy. It warned of a “copper squeeze” and featured an analyst predicting saying copper could go to $6.80 per pound (61% higher than it is today) before demand would start to slow. A lot has changed since then. Copper is down 20% and the hype is gone. But as we stated above, the fundamental supply/demand situation hasn’t improved at all. That’s because it’s going to take years to get copper supply right. The chart below shows how long it takes to build mines in different countries: [CHART] Even in the most mining-friendly jurisdictions the lower end time is 10 years. The leading copper producing countries are even bad. In Chile and Peru, the two largest copper producing countries, the mine development timeline is nearly 20 years. All signs point to a supply crunch and this just reinforces it all. For now though, we know copper is down (yet still up 8% for the year) so there’s no interest. That, for our purposes, is a good thing.
